Ode To A Pushed-Back Grand Opening

March 31, 2015 By Jen Chase

A limerick in four lines about construction woes at TJS’s brand new location….

There once was a juice bar in LV,

That was growing too fast for its addy.

Gorge space was secured; but its build-out, deterred…

By mid-April, an open “Rose” we foresee!

That’s right, Bees. First we thought it would be last November. Then, early 2015. Then March. Then, April 6. But the truth is, brilliance takes time, and though we shouted out the new space in last month’s newsie, we’re nearly certain that by mid April our brand new location in Henderson will be open. We’re calling her “The Rose” since she sits on St. Rose Parkway, and with her parking and easy off-the-highway access we know she’ll be a welcomed spot for our loyals in Henderson who are craving the same cold-pressed juice that Las Vegans near Ft. Apache can get so easily.

Just because the date’s been pushed back doesn’t mean we haven’t been busy! Last week we were in the new space shooting images for upcoming Facebook and blog posts as our contractors drilled and banged away. (Oy.) Here are some behind-the-scenes pics to get you as psyched about the space as we are.

What Grows In Vegas Actually Stays In Vegas

March 31, 2015 By Jen Chase

Local organic produce fills our juices. And that makes us very, very happy.

Produce People of Las Vegas! This is for you.

If you’re not a born-and-bred Las Vegan, the produce expectations of folks who move to Southern Nevada from four-season climes can feel totally out of sync with Mother Nature’s desert sked. Used to apples in the fall? Peas in the spring? Wild strawberries for a hot June minute? Out here, since California is just a state border away and Mexico is our (almost) next-door neighbor, tropical fruit is practically local, and near-year-round tomatoes in restaurants and farmers markets (delicious ones!) are the norm, not the exception.

Last year I wrote a piece in an effort to blow up the misconception that desert=nasty-bad produce. You can read it here, where you’ll also find a handy little visual that the talented Vegas Seven graphic design team created to show you what you can plant, when (or at least buy from local farmer). Because the truth is, with enough water and attention to what’s in your soil, plenty can thrive in our ground as long as you know what to grow. And with Nevada’s multiple growing seasons, sometimes there’s actually more opportunity to enjoy things like tomatoes throughout year, where in a place like my home state of Massachusetts, biting into lush tomatoes outside the itty-bitty window of July-September is like hitting an heirloom lottery.

Vegas Seven Produce Wheel

At TJS we really pride ourselves on sourcing as much organic local produce as we can. And at this blessed time of year when Vegas is the perfect temp, we’re proud to highlight our recipes that are filled with the region’s springtime bounty: carrots, leafy greens and beets. Pick up a Bee Energized, Bee Grateful, Bee On Point, or any of our green juices for mega doses of what Southern Nevada is harvesting right now and enjoy a little Vegas spring in a bottle.

Feel Like A Superhero With Bee Invincible

March 30, 2015 By Jen Chase

“What’s that ‘Bee Invincible’ coffee you have up there on the menu?” is a question we get every now and then. It’s partly because few places in the area serve it—The Juice Standard (TJS) may actually be the only one but don’t quote us—so it’s rare. But even for vegan or Paleo bees used to ordering coffee with almond, soy or coconut milk or cream, seeing coffee made with oil and butter seems a little weird. But that’s until you try it. And if this is totally new territory for you, let us explain….

Ever hear of “buttered coffee” or the trendier term “Bulletproof Coffee?” They’re actually riffs off an ages-old Tibetan drink called “yak butter tea” that uses yak butter the way Westerners use typical dairy in our cuppas. (Tibetans have more yaks than cows so they turn yak milk into butter…butter that can be kept shelf stable for up to a year if wrapped properly.)

In recent years, “buttered coffee” became all the rage when this guy researched the yak butter tea he tried on a Tibetan trek. After understanding the energy it gives Tibetans living and working the land in high altitudes, he learned that yak butter is super high in medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs)…a “healthy fat” that supplies long, slow energy. Back here in the United States, to mimic the Tibetan drink’s benefits he combined a serving of freshly brewed coffee with a tablespoon of coconut oil (high in MCTs and lauric acid…and rootin’-tootin’ tasty) and a tablespoon of grass-fed butter or ghee (close cousin to that yak butter…and, very tasty) to create “buttered coffee.” When you blitz it all up in a high-speed blender the mixture froths like a latte. And it’s just as creamy, without the dairy.

Bee Invincible Ingredients

There’s a lot of info on the Internets about how the oils combine with coffee’s caffeine to slowly release energy rather than in a typical surge or crash. If you’re a food nerd like me, head to The Google and have at it. Recipes abound.

Since few places make this smooth, satisfying (and dareIsay healthy) coffee, most fans make it at home. But a standout feature of TJS’ recipe was deftly explained to me last weekend by TJS Operations Manager Zach Harder.

“One of the things that sets our Invincible apart is that we use espresso rather than freshly brewed coffee, and the texture is sort of cloud-like…light, airy and floaty,” says Harder. Further, Harder says that using two espresso shots and two draws of water uses less water than a typical cup of coffee which also contributes to a richer coffee flavor when blended in TJS’ high-speed Vitamix with a tablespoon of our favorite Purium coconut oil and Kerrygold grass-fed butter (unsalted). (You may also order it with ghee, which is clarified butter that has its milk solids removed through a heating process.)

Harder was totally right. I make mine at home and was blown away by the espresso difference (espresso made with Mothership beans roasted locally by our friend Josh Walter from Sunrise).

Bee Invincible isn’t the acquired taste you’d imagine, especially if you take your brew with a creamer but no sugar. Come try. And if you make yours at home, let us know what you think of ours.

Friends Who Juice—Q&A With Lin Jerome

March 30, 2015 By Jen Chase

Friends Who Juice Image-Lin Smith Jerome

Like Stacy’s Mom, Lin Jerome’s got it goin’ on. One of those rare birds who seems to not only handle but embrace with grace what life throws her way, by day this law-school grad worked for various nonprofits before landing herself in the office of admissions and financial aid at her alma mater. By night she’s the hostess with the mostess at events sponsored by Ladies Who Dine, the organization she founded to connect like-minded, philanthropic women interested in doing good in and around Sin City.

Plus, she juices.

We happily welcome Jerome into the TJS Hive not for her stellar taste in cold-pressed juice (though that helps…no lie), but for the heart, mind and bod she allows our juice to help feed.

Learning About Lin

I grew up in… New York, NY, and moved to Green Valley (Henderson) when I was 10 years old.

I went to college in Nevada. I stayed here because… Vegas is home for me. I love this city and what it has to offer. Vegas is a small town and I love our close-knit community. It’s a community that has ALWAYS been good to me and supported me and I am proud to call Vegas my home. I could not imagine living anywhere else.

The biggest misconception about living in Las Vegas is… that we have no sense of community and are consumed with materialism and a “party culture.” This just isn’t true.

The thing I secretly love most about living here is… feeling at home wherever I go and always seeing a familiar face. We are one big happy family!

I’m a UNLV Law graduate and I work in higher education… but when I was

little, I really wanted to be a… rock star. J

My mantra or “quote to live by” is…  ”A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.” Coco Chanel

What motivates me out of bed in the morn is… my husband, mother and grandmother, and making them proud.

If I had to pick a theme song for my life it would be… Crazy in Love by Beyoncé.

People laugh at me most when they learn… that I sing, and was in a girl group in my late teens.

Don’t get me started talking about… disloyalty!

Every day I strive to… accomplish more.

My health habit I’m teased about the most is… working out at the crack of dawn.

My three dogs are named… Vegas, Mr. Big and Kingston.

True or false: Based on your above answer, you did or didn’t cry on the inside when you saw the closet Big built Carrie in Sex and the City? OMG I definitely did! I am a Sex and the City fanatic! The theme song has been my phone’s ringtone for 8 years (LOL). That closet was to die for! (Hint hint to my husband, Stephen.)

True or False: Your pet tortoise, Valentino, is faster than he looks. He definitely gives Mr. Big a run for his money!

Lin’s Livelihood

My day job is… Associate Director of Admissions for the Boyd School of Law; and, Founder and President of Ladies Who Dine and Candles for a Purpose.

The charity I support most often is… Green Our Planet.

I founded Ladies Who Dine because… there are so many women in our community who truly want to get involved in philanthropy and want to feel a sense of comradery with other women, without having to pay thousands of dollars to be a part of an organization. Plus, who doesn’t love dining out, meeting new people, going on girl’s trips, and giving back at the same time! It’s just fun.

The perk I enjoy most about Ladies Who Dine is… meeting new women and connecting and bonding during our volunteer activities and dining events.

My favorite advice to pass onto female professionals is… do not ever let anyone tell you what it is that you should be doing with your life. I truly believe you can do anything you want as long as YOU believe in it and YOU want to do it.

The best advice I ever received was… “Do what you love, and everything else will fall into place.”

The number one thing I would’ve told my younger self is… save all that cocktailing/cabana host money. (LOL)

Something that scares me is… letting life pass by without experiencing everything I want to experience. I’m a bit of an overachiever.

Something I do that people say is scary is… HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). It’s the best ever!

If I could go anywhere tomorrow, I’d be on a plane to… Cabo.

My top-three future goals are… to partner in a fitness studio; to expand Ladies Who Dine/Candles for a Purpose; and to be able to spend more time with my husband whose schedule is crazier than mine.

The very best part of me is… my desire to give back to others with everything I do and to never give up on anything I believe is worth fighting for.

Lin On Juice

I realized I loved cold-pressed juice when… I stepped foot in TJS! I had never had cold-pressed juice before and I was immediately hooked. I love it!

Today I drink juice because… I love the way it makes me feel and the health benefits juicing presents.

I like to cleanse… every three to four months. I have done cleanses in the past and have been unbelievably miserable: constant headaches, fatigue, and irritability. The first time I did a TJS cleanse I was floored by how amazing I felt. I was happy, had plenty of energy and felt as though I could continue for days on end. Way to go [Jamie and Marcella]…your cleanse is perfection!

When I’m not drinking TJS juice, my favorite cocktail is… Champagne. I am a Champagne junkie. I even have the TJS “Green juice now, Champagne later” shirt.

This is the moment that made me know I wanted juice as a part of my healthy lifestyle:  I love to work out and have been training at Core Studios doing Pilates and HIIT for years. I loved going to class in the mornings and going straight to TJS afterward for juice. Juice was the pick-me-up I needed after class and it became a part of my daily routine.

When people ask, I tell them my fave TJS flave is… Bee WHealthy and most definitely Bee Happy.

The funniest thing that ever happened to me while I was on a cleanse was… going to a very well known restaurant in town and having a small cooler in my purse with my juice. My friends thought it was hilarious.

My advice to a newbee juicer is… to replace one meal a day with a TJS juice and monitor how you feel over a week’s time. Then, move toward doing a three-day cleanse. I guarantee you will feel like a new person and will become just as obsessed as I am. I love TJS!

Get Your Shave On For St. Baldrick’s Foundation

March 4, 2015 By Jen Chase

When Team TJS awoke this morn we’d thought we’d be teasing the TJS newsletter that’s landing in your inbox tomorrow (‘cause if it’s the first Thursday of the month, must be TJS newsletter day!); but we’ve got bigger and better news:

We’re giving away free juice.

(Whaaa?)

Beelieve it, Beeauties! All month long, The Juice Standard (TJS) is treating everyone to free juice who shaves their head in support of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a national org that raises money for cancer-curing research for kids.

Letusjustsay we.heart.St. Baldrick’s. Since so many children lose their loverly long and short locks during treatment, in 1999 St. Baldrick’s found a fun and meaningful way to help kids feel more supported. And through its more than 4,000 head-shaving events across the country, friends, fam and generous St. Baldrick’s supporters take it allll off after raising money from the people in their life who thought they’d never do it. (Right?! Let’s call a spade a spade here, folks! Most people wouldn’t willingly shave their head…talk about an act of love). St. Baldrick’s then takes all the moolah from the new baldies and gives it as grant money wherever the medical community needs it most (mostly research hospitals).

Bald is bee-autiful, peeps! It’s scary to think about facing the world without the hair we sometimes hide behind and don’t even know it…but that fright is nothing compared to how a child may feel about not seeing his or her next bday.

So: Shave your head in March at a St. Baldrick’s event, tag TJS in whatever selfie you post of your bald-ass self to social media, and get a free Bee Pure or Bee Vibrant (both tasty takes on a classic lemonade). And for those of you who have a huge heart but just can’t grab a razor, TJS is now sporting a donations jar at the Ft. Apache store. Plus, if you bring in your clean used bottles you can donate the dollar you’d get back for your recycling straight to the St. Baldrick’s jar.

We heart charity, and we heart St. Baldrick’s. If you do too, there’s nothing we’d like to do more than honor your attempt to bee WHealthy with your spirit (and vanity!) but showering you with some free juice. Hope to see you!

Friends Who Juice—Q&A With Elle Harford

March 1, 2015 By Jen Chase

TJS’ Elle Harford grew up in a small town in British Columbia surrounded by the kind of lush nature Canada is known for, where everyone has a vegetable garden, and eating fresh, produce-filled meals is organic life as everyone knows it. But for the last 10 years, Harford has called Las Vegas home, and clean eating and healthy living hasn’t been as easy as it was during her former life in her northern town.

Elle Profile Pic

“[With] so many temptations and limited options, I admit I veered off in my early twenties,” says Harford of Sin City life. “But, naturally, like a river that flows to the ocean, I found my way back.

Harford is a store manager at TJS and calls working with us “a dream come true. “Since eating raw and organic food is something I’m passionate about, it’s been very rewarding to be able to share it with everyone in our community instead of just my friends.”

Read how Harford puts her stamp on a little section we like to call Friends Who Juice as she opens up about health, happiness, and what, er, gets her (TJS) juices flowin’.

Elle Being Elle

When I’m working at The Juice Standard I feel…happy! It’s my oasis in the desert.

My “quote to live by” is…”Love the life you live; live the life you love.”

What motivates me to get up in the morning is…my family.

The best advice I’ve ever received Is…“Don’t waste time doing something you’re not passionate about.”

My favorite charity Is…Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada. It helped my family in a time of need.

My future goals are…to keep following my bliss; start meditating; read more books; and spend more quality time with the family.

If I could go anywhere TOMORROW, I’d…first head to Germany to visit my Oma (grandmother), and then, to Australia.

Something that scares me is…creepy kids in scary movies.

The very best part of me is…my calmness.

The No. 1 thing I’d tell my younger self…There are two: “Save your money” and “wear sunscreen.”
If I had to pick a theme song for my life it would be…evolving! I love music, so I feel like my theme song changes all the time. Of late I’d have to say, Gravity by DJ Fresh featuring Ella Eyre. I dedicated it to someone special recently. (TJS: “Awwwww!)

Why We Heart Her

I juice because…It makes me feel amazing!

After a cleanse I feel…light as a feather. And, accomplished.

When people ask, I tell them my fave TJS flave is…Bee Effective. It’s so green tasting, and there’s coconut water in it (yum!).

(Speaking of…a topic I just can’t enough of is…coconut oil. Its uses are endless. I could go on forever.)

My advice to a new-bee juicer is…drink lots of water; listen to your body; and keep your calendar clear and a restroom near!

Adorbs, right? Come meet Elle and experience her sincerity and verve while she serves you the best in cold-pressed juice.

Espresso Yourself…With TJS Nut Milk

March 1, 2015 By Jen Chase

Espresso Nutmilk smallIs the scrumptious, protein-y goodness in a bottle of TJS nut milk a breakfast replacer or energy booster?

(How ‘bout both?!)

Even our most ardent green juicing bees come in for something dreamy and creamy every now and then, hoping that one of our five signature nut milks will hold them over ’til they can enjoy their next chewing meal. But for when you need something that’s filling and naturally energizing, the solution is simple:

Add an espresso shot!

TJS serves a kickass Americano, latte, cappuccino, raw cacao mocha, and an exquisitely simple espresso shot, each from organic beans roasted by local Las Vegas master roaster Joshua Walter and our friends at Mothership Roasters (same guys at Sunrise Coffee on Eastern Avenue near the airport). We also have our Bee Invincible (which you can read about here). To those coffee bevvies we add our homemade cashew cream. But for a total treat, ask for a bottle of nut milk, unscrew the cap, take a sip off the top to make a little room, and we’ll add a shot of espresso straight to the source. (We recommend Bee Magnificent or Bee Happy for this experiment but go ahead and bee creative.)

And for a cuppa something super cold or super hot instead, we can also pour an espresso shot over ice and drench it in your nut milk, or steam your nut milk and add an espresso shot for a coffee drink that’s as warming (or cooling) as you need.

As our trusted coffee-roasting connoisseur Josh Walter advised in this month’s Rated magazine feature about the rise of (good) Vegas coffee, the next time you’re looking for a natural jolt that has nada to do with Red Bull, turn to espresso. And by all means, grab a bottle of any of TJS’ nut milks plus an espresso shot. Because TJS nut milk + espresso shot = hot OR cold deliciousness. Try it, Bees! We aim to pleese!

Hello, Beeauties! TJS Is Growing!

March 1, 2015 By Jen Chase

We heard you, Hendo; and like The New York Sun said to Virginia when she wondered if that ‘ol Santa Claus was a poser, “Yes, Henderson, there is a TJS…and it’s coming to a space near you.”

No more trekking to Ft. Apache to satisfy your juice fix (unless you want to). No more bagging “Wednesday-Cleanse Days” because our flagship is too hard to reach with workweek traffic. No more hatin’ on your Vegas bestie because she’s closer to TJS than you are. You’ve humbly made us so popular that we need more space. And with our growth comes a bee-auteous second location on St. Rose Parkway that’s easy peasy to reach from 215, just seconds off Exit 6.

As we near our open date (mid-month, coughcoughcough) we’ll leave you with these bits to whet your juicy whistle: there will be parking (natch); there will be juice (double natch); deliciously chewable treats are TBD; and most important, “The Rose” (as we like to call her) boasts a spacious room filled with TJS’ signature atmosphere—the black walls, the sparkly fixtures, the gold, and our signature hand-drawn art.

(Know what else it’ll have? More comfy space than we know what to do with! But we’re pretty sure it’ll entice our loyal Henderson fans to sit a spell while sipping TJS’ liquid nutrition.)

We’re itching to open but won’t until the details are just right. Stay tuned to our social media and website, and you can always get the skinny from one of our trusted staff behind the counter the next time you hit the Ft. Apache store.

Onward, Bees! Without you, this expansion wouldn’t have been necessary…so we humbly say, “thanks bee to you!”
