Enhancing My Reverence for Nature at The SnowMansion

June 30, 2016 By Jamie Stephenson

Sunset at The SnowMansion.

For two weeks, I spent my vacation time at The SnowMansion, north of Taos, New Mexico, for a permaculture design course. Permaculture—derived from the two words “permanent” and “agriculture”—is a philosophy based on the concept of producing an abundance of food in a manner that won’t run out while at the same time, creating little or no waste. It’s derived from the template of nature: she produces in abundance, and rarely produces waste…for the benefit of us all.

Throughout the course I asked myself, “How can The Juice Standard provide abundance in the Las Vegas community while minimizing waste?” It’s so simple: We can maintain THE highest standards in the industry (i.e., “Only ORGANIC food is served here”). We can (and do) operate with the utmost integrity—the people who work with us want to be here, and they want to learn and grow to be stewards of quality in service and in personal growth. And we can, do and will continue to steward the health of our citizens by serving THE highest-quality medicinal food.
The right thing and the hard thing are often the SAME thing. We take our bottles back, sanitize, and re-use them, just like restaurants do. YOU help us to do this, and we thank you for your help.
Below is a snippet of my two-week journey to a land of extremes…Taos, New Mexico.

This is an example of a “bee garden.” Bees tend to gravitate to blue and purple flowers. Their eyes have a type of color spectrum that draws them to the color. Through their eyes, they see patterns on those flowers that point to where the nectar is. Then, they stick out their long bee tongues and drink the flowers’ nectar.

Honey bees return with tummies full of nectar that will be dried by the beating of thousands of bee wings. This turns raw flower nectar into raw honey.

Bees are statically charged thanks to the rapid beating of their wings. When she mounts her flowers, her positively charged body attracts pollen instantly. She collects it into pouches seen here, and hands it off to her sisters as protein-rich “bee bread.”

Check out Paul Stamens TED Talk, “Nine Ways Mushrooms will Save the World.” Did you know that mushrooms have taken over Chernobyl? The Albert Einstein School of Medicine finds that mushrooms, “have the capacity to use radioactivity as an energy source for making food and spurring their growth.” (Nuclear waste-metabolizing FUNGUS. Is that not insane!? Nature….)

sodCob is an extraordinary building material made of four simple ingredients: clay soil, sand, straw, and water. It is foot-mixed and feels a lot like cold dog poo between the toes. Since it’s NOT cold dog poo, however, it feels WONDERFUL! This elicits a reversal in aging while simultaneously softening the feet. (BONUS!) Cob structures act as thermal mass, heating you in the winter and cooling you in the summer.

February Is Heart Month, So Love Thyself First

January 28, 2015 By Jamie Stephenson

HeartHealth2As the adage goes, you can’t love someone else until you love yourself. So since February is the month of love, what better way to show your love than to take care of home and explore a little self love?

If you have a hard time thinking of where to start, showing yourself some love, first, can be done in baby steps:

Step 1) Try hitting the gym to get your heart rate up and your blood circulating (it helps the bod purge toxins through the skin by sweating, and strengthens the heart and self-esteem at the same time).

Step 2) Employ the 80/20 rule to help boost your self esteem. Never heard of it? The 80/20 states that to maintain your overall health and your looks in a way that makes you feel good about yourself, it takes 80 percent diet and 20 percent exercise. So do what you can in Step 1 to help achieve Step 2.

Step 3) Eat real food.

That last one is especially near and dear to us. Because it’s no secret that we here at The Juice Standard beelieve that drinking raw, fresh cold-pressed juice made from organic produce is incredibly nutritious because it contains real food…you’re just drinking it instead of chewing it. Juice is easily absorbed into the body with help from its active plant enzymes and phytonutrients. And it heals you and sustains you on a cellular level in ways that would blow your mind. (Want glowing dewy skin, a slim-feeling tummy, increased energy for bedroom romps (it’s the month of LOVE after all) then consider The Juice Standard!)

With all the love going ’round this month, it only makes sense that February is National Heart Month! And as it turns out, TJS loves hearts, too. That’s why we load our juices with ingredients like red radish, cucumber, celery, and raw cashew, to keep your ticker pumping nice and strong! How? Red radish is a great source of anthocyanins, a type of flavonoid that is also found in red wine that not only gives the powerful root its color, but has been linked to reducing the occurrence of cardiovascular disease by reducing inflammation – hence the term, an apple a day keeps the doctor away (apples also contain anthoncyanins, FYI).

So yes: Love thy neighbor? Absolutely. But love thy self first. And what better way than through juice.

Friends Who Juice: Q&A With Couple Kyle & Amber Comstock

January 28, 2015 By Jamie Stephenson

With love for family, friends and each other (and a dedication to health), these two are all about big-picture appreciation for life. And OH how much better that life is when you feel good…with juice.

What’s your collectively favorite TJS Juice?

It is impossible to choose just one! Top three are Bee Energized, Bee WHealthy, and Bee Royal. As far as the nut milks go, Bee Happy.

Best advice you ever received:

Kyle: My mom told me to marry Amber (before we were dating).

Amber: Before consuming anything, think about if it will help heal you or kill you.

Why do you cleanse with juice?

Kyle: To make sure we pack in the nutrients and stay healthy and energized.

Amber: I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 5 years ago and told I would have to be on medicine forever. After 3 months of herbs, juice cleansing and a couple of other natural treatments, I was all cured and haven’t had an issue (or taken any pharmaceutical) since. That made me a believer and extra passionate about what I put in my body. Also, Bee Energized does wonders for helping my cramps. I am always sure to grab a few in the week leading up. (Bee on Point also does the trick!)

Who is the person you admire most?

Kyle: My dad.

Amber: My husband.

Finish this sentence: “My future goals are…”

Kyle: Hitting all the places on our bucket list  and becoming a corporate executive.

Amber: Taking care of my family, continue traveling to new places each year and growing our business.

The place you’d go if you could go anywhere tomorrow is…

Kyle: Bora Bora…or space.

Amber: Maldives or Bora Bora.

How do you feel after a juice cleanse?

Kyle: Clean and light.

Amber: Refreshed, energized, and great in a bikini! 😉

A quote you live by is…

Kyle: Go big or go home.

Amber: If you are depressed you are living in the past. If you are anxious you are living in the future. If you are at peace you are living in the present.

A topic you can’t get enough of is…

Kyle: Technology.

Amber: Anything to do with health or travel.

The thing that motivates you to get up in the morning is…

Kyle: Seizing opportunities.

Amber: My dog scratching at my face and barking at me to feed her!

What advice would you would give a newbee juice cleanser?

Kyle: It gets easier.

Amber: Figure out what your reason is for doing the cleanse and keep that in mind the whole time. Also, try to plan it for a time when you don’t have any social outings scheduled.

Something you’re frightened of is…

Kyle: Losing a loved one.

Amber: Being home alone at night.

Your favorite part of yourself is…

Kyle: My mind.

Amber: My outlook on life

What’s one thing you’d want to tell your younger self?

Kyle: Follow your passion. And it’s not dirtbikes.

Amber: Don’t sweat the small stuff.

The theme song of your life is…

Kyle: Danger Zone.

Amber: It’s Your Love by Tim McGraw and Slow Me Down by Sara Evans

Shameless self promotion: How do you feel when you’re at The Juice Standard:

Kyle: Excited and usually hungry!

Amber: Welcome and indecisive. Everything is so good. I can never decide what to get.

Friends Who Juice—First Person With Celine Go

January 8, 2015 By Jamie Stephenson

This Las Vegas-based yoga instructor at Yoga Sanctuary used healthful workouts, smart food choices and juice to work her way toward WHealth and glowing self. Read how this weekly one-day juicer made the jump to her first three-day cleanse…and succeeded.

I was really excited to do the cleanse and on the other hand was doubting myself that I might not be able to do the whole three days. I usually do a day of cleansing every other Monday. So three days I knew was going to be very challenging. I did it anyway and I’M GLAD I DID.

The first day was the hardest for me. Hot herbal tea helped me a lot when I would feel cold. I had a lot of friends supporting me through text messages, Facebook and Instagram, and that helped me stay focused. There were times I would feel light headed and weak. But I was expecting that.

Second day was much easier and I already felt different the morning I woke up. I didn’t feel bloated, my belly felt flat, and I just felt good! I was drinking my juice and tea the whole day and knew that the third day would even be much easier. Well we went to a Christmas party on my third day and WOW was I tempted to just give this juice cleanse up! But I didn’t! I kept on drinking my hot herbal tea and survived the Christmas party. YAY!

I really don’t know how much total weight I lost doing the three-day cleanse because I don’t weigh myself regularly. I believe weighing yourself sets your mood. The best [judge] is how you feel. How your clothes fit and how your energy level is. That for me is what matters most. After doing the three-day cleanse, I felt really amazing! Thank You The Juice Standard! I’m glad we have you in our community.

Friends Who Juice: Tara Woodall-Diary of a 10-day Juice Cleanse!

January 8, 2015 By Jamie Stephenson

TW-before-after

Watch how a 10-day cleanse with The Juice Standard helped this PR account exec for Las Vegas-based Wicked Creative reform her junk food-eating self into an appreciator of drinking her greens (and taking pride in how she felt).

Day 1: Today went well, which I must admit I was surprised about. I thought I would have a hard time today, but it was actually very easy. I even made fried Oreos for a bunch of friends and was not tempted to eat them at all. I will admit, it gets a little hard to drink three Bee WHealthy, but I know it’s the healthiest one, so it makes sense that the cleanse would incorporate it the most.

Day 2: Today was a little more rough, but not really hard. I feel skinnier already and I am down two pounds. Not going to lie, I have a bit of a headache, which started late last night, but overall, I feel fine. I am kind of waiting for this huge burst of energy that everyone says you get when doing this, but I haven’t had that yet – maybe it’s like a Day Three thing? I don’t know. My roommate just made chicken nuggets and I won’t lie… I am envious.

Day 3: So the hunger is real. My stomach growled so much today, however… it wasn’t in pain. I was fine and I am not entirely sure why because I was most definitely hungry. Anyways! I have lost five pounds in the last three days, which I am pretty excited about and my face is very clear. I generally have clear skin anyways, but there is definitely something different about it today – something good. I went to happy hour with two of my co-workers today and just drank water the entire night and wasn’t even tempted to eat anything there, which is really shocking since we went to Kona Grill and they have amazing sliders. So far, so good. Everyone keeps telling me the first three days are the hardest and I must say—if this is the hardest it gets…I am in great shape. By the way, Bee Magnificent is one of the best things I have ever tasted.

Day 4: Oh man… the struggle was real today. I had a massive headache, was light headed and dizzy and just wanted to fall asleep. I know this was probably my body going through a detox, but it was a hard day and I am so thankful it is over. My normal diet consists of Chipotle and Taco Bell and pumping it full of spinach and other nutrients that are good for it is throwing me off a little bit. It’s a good thing, though, because that means I am flushing out all the crap I have been putting into my body. I think I was even delirious at some points—laughing uncontrollably. My cube mate, who is pretty crazy herself, even told me I was acting loopy. Overall, I am glad it is the end of the day and I get my Bee Magnificent.

Day 5: Well the aftermath of the headache is over. I think the worst part is over now it’s just about enduring all of these holiday parties without mentally breaking. The mental aspect is definitely what will make or break you on this cleanse because you feel as though you aren’t eating—and you go around saying “yeah I haven’t eaten in five days,” but you are. You’re just drinking the fruits and veggies that you’d otherwise chew, which is really the only difference. It’s fair to say that from my brain down, I feel good, but I really hope I am mentally strong enough to get over the simple fact that I am not chewing, I’m drinking. Half way through!

Day 6: Today is A LOT better. I don’t have any signs of a headache or lightheadedness. However, I went on a photo shoot and there was alcohol there, which was really hard to turn down. It’s no secret that I enjoy a good cocktail every now and then… more often the now rather the then. 🙂 I mean we live in Vegas, come on. However, I am pleased to say that although the rather attractive bartender asked me multiple times to taste test the three cocktails he made for the shoot, I politely declined and explained that I was committed to my juicing for the next four days to which he commented on how crazy I must be. Again this goes back to the mental aspect of all of this. If you think about the fact that you are “not able” to be social because you can’t drink or can’t “eat” then you will break, no doubt. If you look at it as still being social, but instead of having a Stella Cidre (my favorite drink) – filled with tons of empty calories that will make their way straight to your love handles where they will happily make a home for themselves and their family members —you are having a Bee WHealthy that is much much much healthier for you in every way possible, then you will definitely make it.

Day 7: Today is when the home stretch begins…three days left. I can totally do this. Forget the fact that it’s Friday and I am going home to California for the holidays, which means food… lots of food, but I can do this. Keeping in mind all the health benefits of this cleanse really helps take my current “juice brain” off the fact that I am missing out on Christmas cookies and white chocolate covered oreo balls shaped into little snowmen – all sarcasm aside, it really does help. I can miss out on a few of those things to live a healthier life. 🙂

Day 8: I am beginning to enter the “change of life” state of mind, which is what I call it when you realize that you are not supposed to be living healthy like this for this 10 days, but rather, for the rest of your life. I don’t want to just end on the tenth day and go back to eating like I was before. First of all, I’ve gone through too many emotions in the past eight days to just throw it all away over some processed food and second of all… I like the feeling of my clothes fitting a little looser. Yeah, that’s always a plus.

Day 9: Down to the wire today and I am feeling good. I kept myself busy all day today wrapping presents like crazy and hanging out with family. They feel bad because they think they can’t eat around me, but I am stronger today than I have been for the last week because I am NOT about to throw this away the day before it’s over. Of course, when I told my family to eat whatever they want and I will just drink my Bee Energized (I was on my second juice of the day at this time), they opted to go to Chipotle. And I am happy to say that although my love for Chipotle is unlike anything I have ever felt before, I stayed strong and sipped on my juice while my parents indulged in roasted bell peppers and zesty chicken.

Day 10: Oh yeah, today is the day and I won’t lie, I am excited for tomorrow to chew my food, but I am glad I experienced the cleanse. I know that I have discipline now and that makes me feel AWESOME. I mean I knew I had discipline to work out on a consistent basis, but my diet has always been my downfall and now I know I can control it. This has definitely been a learning experience and I am happy to say that I did it. Bring on the rest of my last day. 🙂

January is Blood Donor Month

December 27, 2014 By Jamie Stephenson

American Red Cross

With the calendar getting ready to flip to a new year, the American Red Cross is asking eligible blood donors to make a resolution to give blood regularly in 2015, beginning with National Blood Donor Month in January. Did you know that January is National Blood Donation Month!? Now that you do, we want all of you awesome bees who are thinking about donating to your nearest blood blank to have the cleanest blood possible…and we have a few tricks to remove all of those nasty bad toxins that may be building upon your blood.

It starts with beets, Burdock root, Himalayan salt, oregano, pineapple and tomato. These six little awesome ingredients are big supporters of your liver and bloodstream, and they give your blood a solid, oxygenized cleaning. So before you go off being a hero and saving lives, grab a Bee Energized…loaded with enough beets to make your blood sparkle.

Why we should give blood:  Blood contains many life-saving components that can help to treat different illnesses and injuries. For many people, blood donors are their lifeline. Blood donation gives a proud feeling of touching someone’s life in such a beautiful way. It’s an experience that no words can define. You have to donate blood yourself to find out. You also benefit in other ways by donating blood as it reduces the chances of ischemic heart diseases (beginning of heart problems) as frequent donations reduce the accumulated and unwanted iron load from the body. Your blood donation will also get you your blood insurance from us. By keeping the blood line flowing, you will greatly contribute towards a healthier, happier society. Do remember, any one may require blood any time including ourselves and our dear ones.

National Blood Donor Month recognizes the importance of giving blood and platelets while honoring those who roll up a sleeve to help patients in need. It has been observed during January since 1970, and that’s no coincidence. Winter is an especially difficult time to collect enough blood to meet patient needs. Unpredictable winter weather can result in blood drive cancelations, and seasonal illnesses, like the flu, may cause some donors to be unable to make or keep blood donation appointments.

Donors of all blood types are needed, especially those with O negative, A negative and B negative.

Setting Goals for the New Year

December 22, 2014 By Jamie Stephenson

Dear Honey Bees,

With the New Year upon many are thinking about their resolutions for the New Year. It’s a time for letting go of the things that we may be holding onto that no longer serve us. At the same time, it’s also the perfect opportunity to bring in that which we do want and desire most.

Here are some great ways to set, achieve and maintain your goals for 2015:

Meditation. Meditation is a great prelude to setting your goals. Sit in a quiet spot and begin to breath deeply and fully. Just become aware of your breath. If other thoughts begin to arise, simply (without judgement) bring your awareness back to the breath. After a minute or so, ask yourself the 4 soul questions according to Deepak Chopra:

  • Who am I?
  • What is it that I truly want or desire?
  • What is my purpose in life (can also be stated as ‘how can I serve?’)
  • What am I grateful for? These questions are a great foundation and starting point for setting goals that are meaningful and worthwhile.

Write down your goals. After extensive research about what successful people do on a daily basis, there were a few similarities almost completely across the board – two of which were meditation and setting goals. Use a note-taking app like evernote and don’t hold back.

  • Try the train of thought exercise. Just write down what comes to your head without a filter. Don’t stop writing for about 5 minutes.
  • Go through your list and prioritize. Choose 1 or 2 main goals for the year and what you would like to accomplish for the day, week, month, quarter and year.
  • Be Specific. Instead of writing down things that are vague like “I want to start a business”, try something more concrete like, “ I want to own a yoga studio that holds ‘x’ amount of classes per day with ‘x’ amount of students per class.” State the size of the studio and how many rooms would be in it. What forms of yoga will you teach? How many employees will you have? Do you sell merchandise? Do you have a website where you sell merchandise online? Do you have guest speakers and if so how ofter? What will they teach? How much revenue will you make in one year?…You get the point.

State your Obstacles. Once you clearly know what your obstacles are, you can more easily devise a plan to conquer them. Be realistic and list everything that could be holding you back from your goals. They can be external influences, but more often than not, they are internal beliefs that with a simple acknowledgement, can be shifted – opening you up to new possibilities, new perspectives, new ideas, and a whole new life.

Ask “How will I accomplish my goals?” What are the steps you need to take to make your dreams a reality? Make a list of all the avenues and connections you can go through to make it happen.

Share your goals (but only to those that support you wholeheartedly). Get feedback on your ideas. Ask your good friends and family for their suggestions. Ask them to hold you accountable and check in for updates on your path towards completion.

Believe it into existence. If you can ‘see’ it, you can ‘be’ it. Know that ANYTHING is possible and don’t let negative thinking or anything else get in your way.

Season’s Greetings!

December 3, 2014 By Jamie Stephenson

It’s that time of the year again when we find ourselves mindlessly snacking on gluten-filled sugar-pops, rich dips, casseroles and brown sugar-glazed, coco-cola ham! Our daily choices affect how we feel and how we look. Before we know it, the holidays are over and so are those comfy pants you’ve been sporting at home with the family. The Juice Standard made a promise to its bees earlier this year when we opened: we offer you the most convenient form of delicious, nutritious food, in convenient juice form. So come on in and grab a six-pack of organic cold-juice. It’s pounds of produce in every bottle. This is surely more veggies than you could ever chew and you’ll curb your appetite and boost your immune system.

Holiday Juiceology

November 28, 2014 By Jamie Stephenson

Continuing our holiday theme with this newsletter, our gift to you this season is wrapped in chocolate, spiked with peppermint and garnished with a traditional holiday candy (HINT: it’s red and white!) Mix Bee Happy, a delicious blend of filtered water, coconut water, raw cashew, raw Brazil nut, raw walnut, raw local honey, raw cacao, vanilla bean and pink Himalayan salt, with a shot or two of the holiday classic, Peppermint Schnapps, give it a little jingle bell shake with ice and serve in a martini glass. If you love chocolaty flavors, sprinkle cocoa powder on top, or if you can’t get enough peppermint, crush up some candy canes for a bee-autiful (and delicious) holiday garnish.
