Juice Yourself Healthy…With Ginger

June 3, 2015 By Jen Chase

You’ve probably long known ginger is a powerhouse in the healthy lifestyle department, but do you know why? Decades of research backs this root’s benefits. Here’s why TJS loves it (and why you should, too).

Our Wellness and Flu Shots are just two ways to spice up your life (and health) the TJS way...with ginger!

Our Wellness and Flu Shots are just two ways to spice up your life (and health) the TJS way…with ginger!

TJS’ CEO and Co-Founder Jamie Stephenson is our resident juice-u-cator when it comes to keeping us honest about the bennies in our products’ ingredients. But since even she (and the rest of us!) have to look stuff up every now and then, a recent surf of the Internets pulled up a not-so-recent yet still-so-relevant study about one heck of a powerful little root. And as usual, one bite from the ol’ Information Apple led us down a path to more research and taught us even more about one of The Juice Standard’s most relied upon ingredients: Ginger.

BACKSTORY ON A RIGHTEOUS ROOT

The article that really opened our eyes—Ginger Inhibits Cell Growth and Modulates Angiogenic Factors In Ovarian Cancer Cells—lives at PubMed.gov, a site maintained by the U.S. National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health in Washington, D.C. Though written in 2007, the abstract calls out ovarian cancer as “the most lethal gynecologic malignancy” and the fifth highest cause of death by cancer in women.

Scary.

But once you get over the article’s fright factor, it’s enlightening to learn how ginger may potentially prevent the development of a certain pathway in an ovarian cancer cell thanks to its anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties.

Not-so-scary.

That spicy research is far from isolated as ginger has been the focus of medical studies for decades. In the abstract of a 2005 study, Ginger—An Herbal Medicinal Product With Broad Anti-Inflammatory Actions, it’s noted that since the 70s, ginger has been identified as an “herbal medicinal product that shares pharmacological properties with non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs” and that it “modulates biochemical pathways activated in chronic inflammation.” All that from something you can pick up from your local grocery store.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU

The mentions above substantiate what The Juice Standard has long beelieved:

The road to WHealth and glowing self is paved with the tops of juice bottles…not bottles of meds.

Course we beelieve there’s a place for Western medicine. A huge place. But isn’t it a good feeling to know there’s a food-based tool like ginger that when added to our let’s-keep-ourselves-healthy arsenal, we can stave off disease-causing inflammation? Isn’t it a good feeling to know that YOU, our Beeautiful Juicers, may choose to control some of your own health destiny?

Yepper. We think so, too.

HELP US HELP YOU TAKE ACTION

If you want to inject more ginger in your diet, here are the TJS products that will help put you in the driver’s seat of your own health by keeping your internal inflammation down, and your gorgeous health up-up-up:

Crafty ‘Juicetails’ For Father’s Day

June 3, 2015 By Jen Chase

He may have said, “Don’t play with your food!” but we’re pretty sure if Dad saw these playful juice-based cocktails in the offing it would’ve been more like, “Fill-er up, Kiddo!”

The Juice Standard was psyched back in April when Vegas Seven magazine’s Xania Woodman paired her mixology smarts with a TJS Singleton Six-Pack to concoct some luscious libations. It wasn’t the first time we had some Seven love. That was here back in 2013. But Ms. Woodman had the good graces to write about her tasty exploits here  and for that we’re grateful. So for your free press (boom!) and your delicious suggestions, Ms. Woodman…we salute you beecause you juice.

But now it’s June, Bees, and this month we’re featuring our own cocktalian machinations to honor the gents in our lives who’ve gone out of their way to show us what being a real man is all about. And while we love the Dad bod as much as the next bee, for the pops trying to keep it (healthy) real while indulging in all that’s deliciously sacred in this world alcohol, beehold…TJS Juicetails for Dad’s Day. Drink up, sweet men.

The Bee On Vacay

...By far the healthiest piña colada you'll ever make, and the easiest vacation-in-a-glass a Dad'll ever take.

…By far the healthiest piña colada you’ll ever make, and the easiest vacation-in-a-glass a Dad’ll ever take.

Spirulina’s grassy quality in TJS’ Bee Excellent lends some pretty interesting depth (and health) to what would be an otherwise calorie-laden riff on a piña colada. Please: Don’t skimp on the lime zest topper. Makes a difference. And for God’s sake, ain’t Dad worth it?

Makes 1 drink.

Ingredients

  • ¾ ounce coconut rum (Trader Vics’ is coconutty and not too sweet)
  • 1 ounce TJS’ Bee Excellent nut milk, chilled
  • ½ tablespoon fresh organic lime juice
  • Lime zest to garnish

Method

In a shaker with ice, combine the rum, Bee Excellent and lime juice, shake vigorously, and pour over a short glass filled with ice. Using a microplane, gently grate the skin of a washed organic lime. Take care to only grate green and avoid the white pith.

Bee On Vacay. Don't skimp on the zest. It makes it. Really.

Frozen Mexican Haute Chocolate

Creamy, cold, spicy, sweet...complexity at its best, just like Dad.

Creamy, cold, spicy, sweet…complexity at its best, just like Dad.

Papa gotta sweet tooth? Papa like a little Mexican? Kids love TJS’ Bee Happy but it goes to a whole new level with some heat and spice. And alcohol. Patrón XO Café Incendio is the brand’s latest baby that mixes rich chocolate flavor with ancho chili. Not for the faint hearted, if you like-a da spice, add more Patrón. Too hottt-with-three-Ts to handle? Add more nut milk. Easy peasy.

Makes 1 drink.

Ingredients

  • ½ ounce Patrón Incendio
  • 1.5 ounces TJS’ Bee Happy nut milk, chilled
  • One pinch each cardamom and allspice (optional)
  • Freshly ground black pepper for garnish (optional)

Method

In a shaker with ice, combine the tequila, Bee Happy and spices (if using), shake vigorously for at least 30 seconds, and pour into a chilled martini glass. Top with a grind of freshly ground black pepper, or serve and sip as-is.

Like with the Bee On Vacation's lime zest, adding a sprinkle of spice or the suggested grind of black pepper keeps this drink way interesting.

The Buzz-Inga

Chocolate and coffee are two great tastes that taste great together, but if Dad likes his coffee straight up, swap out Bee Happy for Bee Magnificent or Bee I'm Possible.

Chocolate and coffee are two great tastes that taste great together, but if Dad likes his coffee straight up, swap out Bee Happy for Bee Magnificent or Bee I’m Possible.

Kahlua? We hardly knew ya. TJS staff at The Hive and The Rose suggest adding espresso to nut milks for added energy, but seriously…energy never tasted this good! Patrón steps it up with its XO Café, a coffee-laden liqueur that’s great on its own but better in chocolatey Bee Happy. If Dad likes his coffee straight up, sub Happy for something more vanilla-y like Bee Magnificent or Bee Legendary.

Makes 1 drink.

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce Patrón XO Café
  • 2 ounces Bee Happy (for mocha) or Bee Magnificent or Bee Legendary (for coffee)

Method

Similar to the Frozen Mexican Haute Chocolate, in a shaker with ice, combine the tequila and your nut milk of choice and shake vigorously for at least 30 seconds. Pour into a chilled martini glass, and serve.

The Bee WHealthy™ Cocktail

There's a ton of play in this recipe, so take Dad's palate into consideration and experiment since variety is the spice of life (said every dad, everywhere).

There’s a ton of play in this recipe, so take Dad’s palate into consideration and experiment since variety is the spice of life (said every dad, everywhere…or maybe just mine). Love you, Daddy!

Martini purists loathe fancy-schmancy takes on the classic martini, so whatever you do, don’t just throw stuff in a shaker and call it something it’s not. This, Bees, is a cocktail, and a forgiving one at that. Use the recipe as a guideline, but tweak to your palate toward more vodka, juice, bitters, or anything else that tickles Dad’s fancy.

Makes 1 drink.

Ingredients

  • Equal parts best-quality vodka (we like Tito’s and Ketel one) and TJS Bee WHealthy™

Optional add-ins:

  • Dash celery salt
  • Fee Brothers Old Fashioned Aromatic Bitters or Angostura Bitters
  • Fee Brothers Lemon bitters
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Dash Tabasco sauce, chipotle version

Method

In a shaker with ice, combine the vodka, Bee WHealthy™ and your choice of add in and shake vigorously for at least 30 seconds. Pour a sip into a glass and adjust for taste before serving in a chilled martini glass.

Bee Chill Is A Special Summer Sipper

June 2, 2015 By Jen Chase

Eating seasonable is just plain reasonable…and this is one TJS special that will keep your summer sipping interesting.

We love consistency just like the next bee, but part of the joy of sourcing The Juice Standard’s organic produce, nuts, grains and seeds (from as many local purveyors as we can) is that we get to weave flavors in an out of our menu as the season allows. And for summer, that means one of our favorites is back in the rotation.

WHAT: Bee Chill

This beeautiful juice isn't just delicious...it even looks pretty in the bottle!

This beeautiful juice isn’t just delicious…it even looks pretty in the bottle!

WHY: Packed with super-hydrating watermelon, cooling cucumber and alkalizing lemon that helps undo some of the acidic hurt we suffer from digesting processed foods, not only does Bee Chill help keep your insides clean but it’s the antidote to heat no matter where you live. How? Bee Chill’s main ingredient is watermelon…and if all you ever thought was that this quintessential picnic add-on was just a go-to portable fruit, watermelon has some unsung health bennies:

We bee grateful for orgs like OrganicFacts.net that help keep us juice-u-cated about the produce we freaking love to press!

We bee grateful for orgs like OrganicFacts.net that help keep us juice-u-cated about the produce we freaking love to press!

  • It’s low in sugar (so it’s good for diabetics);

  • It flushes out kidneys (which helps keep them in good health); and,

  • It has decent amount of vitamins and minerals that make it a sweet treat that’s actually good for you.

HEALTHY THINKING BEYOND THE BOTTLE: If you haven’t already, something you’ll notice when you start replacing processed sugars or other foods with tasty bits from Mother Nature (like watermelon) is that your body will start craving the new tastes…but if you’re smart, it won’t just be your body that does the craving!

TJS COO and Co-Founder Marcella Williams-Melnichuk has had her kids on a healthy diet for so long that when they were littletons, they thought of dates as candy! Our point? With enough exposure, drinks like Bee Chill and others in the TJS repertoire can taste just as good as that craptastic carbonated canned stuff we thought was a treat when we were kids. So when you can, see what you can swap out of your everyday repertoire and swap in from ours. From hardcore organic green juice to more newbee flavors with natural sweetness from organic carrot and apple (and even honey and spices in our nut milks), there’s something for everyone with an open mind and an open mouth.

(And seriously: Just THINK what our health would be like today if one of the most iconic ads in all of ad-dom featured colorful, juice-filled bottles?)

We really think we can change our drinking habits a bottle at a time. Don’t you?

TJS Weekend Reads For The Busy Bee

May 22, 2015 By Jen Chase

Green Kitchen Travels is just one in a kickass stack of books at The Rose waiting for you to pick up and flip as you sip. Best enjoyed with something green and tasty like a Bee True To You.

Green Kitchen Travels is just one in a kickass stack of books at The Rose waiting for you to pick up and flip as you sip. Best enjoyed with something green and tasty like a Bee True To You.

Looking for some weekend reads? Pre-summer brain food? For today’s busy bee, taking a personal time out for a little written-word R&R can mean anything from catching up on food blogs to high-thought books about organics’ regulations…and that range was WAY proven at the Friday morn weekly Team TJS meeting, where as we helped each other plan and prioritize our contribution to the company for the week ahead, we snuck in a little talk time about what we’re reading.

We’re all pretty like-minded…but man, hello diverse! Here are the four titles we realized we’re groovin’ on that we thought we’d mention to you lovelies. Beecause sharing is caring.

Happy weekend, Bees!

WHO…Jamie, co-founder and CEO

SHE’S READING… Fruitless Fall: Collapse of the Honey Bee and the Coming Agricultural Crisis (Rowan Jacobsen)

IT’S ABOUT…the incredibly sad/scary/insert your favorite gutting adjective about what caused honeybees to go AWOL in spring 2007. Citing the plight by its many names (colony collapse disorder; mad bee disease; bee auto-immune deficiency) and using facts and plain-speak like a good investigative food journo should, (plus a lotta bee love), Jacobsen explains how neurotoxin-laced pesticides and even antibiotics used by conventional farmers on flower crops across the country are sickening the bees we need to help pollinate our every three bites of food. If you ever needed a reason for eating organic, Jacobsen does you a solid with his 288 pages.

WHY READ? Change needs to happen when it comes to how we view organic farming, says Jamie. Hard not to feel doomsdayish about the plight of innocent bees. But there’s so much hope if writers like Jacobsen help influence future generations of mindful eaters. His most important audience? The farmers and regulators at national levels who have the ability to keep this from beecoming a decades-long catastrophee.

WHO…Mallory, creative director

SHE’S READING…Green Kitchen Travels: Healthy vegetarian food inspired by our adventures by David Frenkiel and Luise Vindahl.

IT’S ABOUT…So there’s this couple. And they’re new parents. And they have a crazy-popular blog where they write crazy-popular posts of food that’s beautiful to eat and look at (Vindahl is a photog and the book and blog sure show it). This second book of theirs features 90 recipes they’ve enjoyed during travels around the world. Vegetarian and/or vegan and almost entirely gluten-free, the dishes stand strong alone; but coupled with the artistry and total passion this duo puts into sharing their love of healthful, mindfully good food, well it’s worth grabbing a green TJS juice and hunkering down for some un-guilty pleasure reading.

WHY READ? Um, did you not just read the above? If for no other reason, read it why Mal is: she loves the story and the recipes.

BONUS BOOM! If you get your juice at The Rose on St Rose Parkway there’s a copy on the communal reading shelf. So go ahead. Sip and flip.

***

WHO…Marcella, co-founder and COO

SHE’S READING…Mating in Captivity: Unlocking Erotic Intelligence by Esther Perel.

IT’S ABOUT…Get yer mind outta the gutter. Yes, “erotic” is in the title but this book is so deep. So. Perel’s a psychotherapist and her long-heralded book is clear and direct in presenting insights about coupledom and sexuality, and how to balance the two. Gays, straights, marrieds, singletons…this book is about conflict resolution and finding peaceful balance in a relationship, and its lessons, if learned early, can help alter your lifelong lens on love and the intimacy sought (and hopefully found) between two people.

WHY READ? Honestly, we hear about this relationship shit on the fly but often don’t develop an understanding about it until we’re in trouble: desire requires distance but intimacy needs proximity, or what’s it takes to keep a spark in a relationship. Whether you have an A+ relationship or you’re looking for one, there’s no bad time to pick up this puppy, and a refresher will always make you better. Ask Marce. She’s so wise.

WHO…Jen, content director

SHE’S READING…Kundalini Yoga, The Flow of Eternal Power by Khakti Parwha Kaur Khalsa

IT’S ABOUT…With the heading, “A Simple Guide to the Yoga of Awareness,” this book is like Kundalini For Dummies. Khalsa was taught by Yogi Bhajan, Ph.D., the daddy of kundalini and the gem responsible for bringing it to the West, and it’s written with the same humor and lightness Bhajan’s teachings are known for. A flavor of yoga that weaves song, chant and meditation with movement to increase the body’s kundalini energy, it’s an easy-to-follow guide covering how we can yoga ourselves toward ultimate health and wellness.

WHY READ? Kundalini is an acquired taste, but don’t be fooled: it can be way more aerobic of body and mind than it seems at first blush. And for anyone who’s dabbled, this book lends deeper meaning to what’s done in a class. Essential for anyone who’s hooked on kundalini as a tool for navigating the day while connecting to something higher…both in the Universe and in ourselves.

Juice Myth Debunked: Juice vs. Smoothie

May 18, 2015 By Jen Chase

In the juice vs. smoothie smackdown, the winner…is you. Here’s how.

Some of the awesome managers at The Hive (the Ft. Apache store) gave Team TJS a heads up about a question they’ve fielded a lot lately, and it’s one that Marcella hears a lot, too, and wanted cleared up:

WHAT’S BETTER: COLD-PRESSED JUICE OR SMOOTHIES?

Truth is, they’re pretty opposite: one has soluble fiber (juice), one has insoluble fiber (smoothies); one’s a known meal replacer; one’s the Flusher of All-Things Nastybad we store in our gut…yet if made right—with more veggies than fruit, more produce than protein-pumping additives—both do your bod a solid and are great for increasing your produce intake. But it does depend on how you want to achieve your #MissionNutrition:

Our ubiquitous Bee WHealthy. Can't even tell you how many pounds of produce are packed into this puppy. (Say that 10 times fast.)

Our ubiquitous Bee WHealthy™. Can’t even tell you how many pounds of produce are packed into this puppy. (Say that 10 times fast.)

JUICING extracts most of the insoluble fiber from produce, leaving the soluble kind behind. Insoluble fiber helps create stool and makes it bulky so it moves food through the system. In the absence of insoluble fiber, and with less need to move that shit on out (literally), drinking juice makes it easy for the bod absorb nutrients into the bloodstream because it doesn’t make the digestive system work so hard. It’s also why juicing may be better for some folks with digestive problems. Think of it as a kinder, gentler way to eat your veggies.

SMOOTHIES contain all the insoluble fiber that juice is missing, so they keep you fuller, longer.

JUICING is perfect for when the goal is to consistently flush your system with nutrients as you rid your bod of what’s left from the “reward foods” we love to enjoy (and, yes: even scratch-made baked goods, homemade ice cream and craft cocktails leave behind a trail of nasties). Thank juice’s soluble fiber for that and for absorbing water in our systems, acting like a pre-biotic to help build up good bacteria in the gut, and helping to regulate blood sugar.

This was the limited-run "Bee Mine" from last February. Pretty, huh? You can see that smoothies are thicker and make an excellent meal replacement...but be mindful of hidden sugar.

This was the limited-run “Bee Mine” from last February. You can see that smoothies are thicker and make an excellent meal replacement…but watch hidden sugar.

SMOOTHIES can act as a dependable meal replacement when made with healthy protein powder or low-fat dairy or dairy replacement like nutmilks.

JUICING lets you to consume the equivalent of POUNDS of produce in one easy-to-sip glass at a time thanks to the removal of the produce’s harder-to-digest cellulose.

SMOOTHIES allow you to effortlessly ingest things you enjoy having in your diet like supplement powders, adaptogens, seeds and ground nuts…most of which wouldn’t typically taste as good going down the hatch if they were mixed with veggie juice.

(See? Different yet beeautifully the same in that they both nourish the body. Just be sure to always opt for veggie-heavy recipes since sugar will never leave you as light and lithe as greens.)

And since we’re equal-opportunity product promoters here, now’s a great time to remind that, yes, The Juice Standard is a raging cold-pressed juice bar that sources organic produce, nuts, seeds and grains for its recipes…but we also sport four regular-menu smoothies—Green Is Good, the BFF, Protein Power, and Berry Antioxidizing—for when you think that sipping your meal will do your body good. You know. Like this guy taught us.

3-Day Cleanse Incentive Is Almost A Memory

May 6, 2015 By Jen Chase

All May, anyone who’s bought a three-day cleanse has gotten a few little extras: a little coffee, a little cash and a whole lotta cleansing. But the incentive is almost gone!

Intrigued? It goes a lil’ something like this….

Pictured is the TJS Green Standard Cleanse. What's better than getting yourself all clean on the inside and having a few extra dollars in your pocket, to boot?

Pictured is the TJS Green Standard Cleanse. What’s better than getting yourself all clean on the inside and having a few extra dollars in your pocket, to boot?

WHAT: Ca$h+Coffee

WHEN: FOUR MORE DAYS (May 28-31)

HOW IT WORKS: With every three-day cleanse you buy before 1 June, on the fourth day, bring back your 18 rinsed bottles for an $18 refund (that’s $1 for every rinsed glass bottle), plus your choice of a free BEE INVINCIBLE or RAW CACAO MOCHA as a thank you from TJS. Coinciding with our Military Month “FUN-AN-THROPY” effort, we’ll wholeheartedly accept donations of any amount toward our collection for Wounded Warrior Project.

WHY: The three-dayer is TJS’ most popular cleanse, so what better time to encourage you spring sippers to juice with us. (Think of juice like soap for your insides. Yes! “Insides Soap!” Soap that tastes delicious and nothing like soap!)

As for the free Bee Invincible or Raw Cacao Mocha, easing off a cleanse should include gentle chewing like raw or steamed produce and some good fats…then, a move toward gently cooked grains, and finally, protein (if you eat it). But for folks who love their coffee and can’t wait the three-day breakup to be over, our Bee Invincible is the healthiest cuppa in all the land. (And if you’re crazy for cacao, the Raw Cacao Mocha is for you.)

Treats are sweet! Buy a three-day cleanse before 1 June and your bod, belly (and pocket!) will reap the rewards.

Treats are sweet! Buy a three-day cleanse before 1 June and your bod, belly (and pocket!) will reap the rewards.

What’s in ‘em? Made from two scrumptious espresso pulls of Mothership Coffee’s locally roasted beans, plus a combo of grass-fed butter, ghee and coconut oil (you choose what goes in), the healthy fats in Bee Invincible slow caffeine absorption and help your bod avoid the typical spike-and-crash like a sugar- and dairy-laden coffee drink might.

Prefer chocolate in your coffee? The Raw Cacao Mocha has the same espresso plus raw cashew milk, cacao and honey, plus cinnamon and some steam. When it’s all blended up, you’ll never miss a sugar-laden something ending in “ino” ever again.

Seriously: What price is WHealth? Offer good at at both “The Hive” (4555 S. Ft. Apache, Rd., Suite 144, Las Vegas, NV 89147) and “The Rose” (2530 St. Rose Pkwy. Henderson, NV 89074) all month long.

A TJS Fast Is All About Support

May 6, 2015 By Jen Chase

We’re not into root-a-toot-tooting our own horns over here, but when we’re proud, we’re proud. And anyone who’s fasted with The Juice Standard knows that the minute you make up your mind to drink ours versus theirs is when the support starts. And support is one of the things we’re praised for most. Grin.

Now, beelievers know that fasts (or “cleanses,” if you prefer that word but we’re going with fast) purge toxins, fats, metals, free radicals, and other ick stuff from your system. But what if you’re on the fence, anyway? Beehold: A TJS Cheat Sheet about why juice fasts are good but TJS juice fasts are best.

TJS Green Standard Cleanse

TJS Green Standard Cleanse

WHY FAST?

  • Innards feel “off” and you can’t pinpoint why?
  • Late-night, work-travel room service weighing you down?
  • Indulging at restaurants more than usual?
  • Crave the clarity from sipping pure nutrition?

Disparate answers that all happen to be right. From weight loss and glowy skin to increased energy and inner reflection, juice fasts of one to however-many days you choose calm our insides (and often busy brains, too) by resting the digestive tract from breaking down whole foods and letting it almost effortlessly absorb the nutrient-dense goodness in cold-pressed juice.

WHY FAST…WITH TJS?

Keepin’ it real, here:

1) We’re organic. Not a little organic. Not kinda. Not organic except for when conventional is cheaper. We source organic like these guys are farmers. And not many juice bars can say that and we’re mad proud we can.

2) We’re local. We beelieve freshness is a virtue and instead of cleansing with juice from another part of the country, we cold press what Nevada and its surrounding states so bountifully provide so you may drink local. You’re most certainly welcome.

3) We’re bomb with customer service. Seriously: The best reason to juice fast with TJS is that we all care. Mallory puts a you-can-do-it love note in your juice bag just like momma used to write. Marcella is crazy-ass present at both locations, ever ready to answer questions. And Jamie’s done these fasts so often there’s nothing she won’t take the time to try to answer based on her personal experience alone (and her research skillz rock).

Caring. We all just reallyeffingcare.

We’re not a pop-up. Not a fad. Not a company run by people removed from their product. We are our product. We have standards. And we hope our juice standards are yours.

We Salute Our Troops

May 6, 2015 By Jen Chase

Military. Soldiers. Strength. Freedom. How do those words make you feel? Do you have friends or fam who have fought for their country? If so, we don’t even know them but can say without measure that we appreciate their selflessness.

United We Juice

United We Juice

Whatever it is that moves someone to fight for the rights of people they’ve never met is enigmatic at best, and something The Juice Standard honors so deeply that this month, when we were looking to put our philanthropy where our heart is, we chose Wounded Warrior Project. You’ve probably seen the ads on TV or at McCarran: it’s the national org that started as a program to provide comfort items to soldiers who returned home wounded from their tours in Afghanistan in Iraq, and it’s morphed into a full-on, long-term assistance effort supporting any wounded service member as they acclimate to post-military life.

Here’s the deal: In May, for all you beeautiful juicers who are already so good about recycling your glass Singletons for $1, we’ll happily welcome you to donate your buckeroo to our collection for the Wounded Warrior Project cause. By month’s end, we’ll donate in the name of the company from every thoughtful dollar given.

Think about it: Strange countries and scary places. Building camaraderie with folks who might not make it. Danger. The unknown. And for what?

Not for what. For whom. And by for whom we mean for us.

Whether their need is mental, physical or spiritual, once soldiers come home we beelieve in taking care of them beecause they’ve long taken care of us. That’s why we’re proud to support Wounded Warrior Project this month. Hope you will be, too.

Evolution’s Announcement, HPP (Or Not) And You

April 21, 2015 By Jen Chase

HPP ain’t the way to bee (for The Juice Standard) but many juiceries use the process. We don’t judge…but we do have opinions. Read below and decide for yourself what’s best for your WHealth™.

True: All that cucumbery goodness would keep in an HPP bottle for up to six weeks, but where’s the honest-to-goodness freshness in that? We don’t judge companies that use HPP…but we won’t.

Did you see today’s news about how Evolution Fresh (makers of cold-pressed juices and smoothies) is adding a bevvy of fruit and veggie juices to its already gargantuan lineup? (It’s not long. You can read it here.) This spring, five new flavors of its cold-pressed juice—plus a current flavor already in its repertoire—will join Evolution’s 42 others…but they’ll be available in smaller bottles (11 ounces vs. the 15.2 ounce-bottles they make now).

As always, juicy news of any variety gives us reason for pause because there isn’t a company on the planet that doesn’t get a little antsy when someone does something different. But instead of useless hand wringing, Evolution’s announcement gives us a perfect podium for talking about something major we think sets The Juice Standard from the rest:

We’re committed to sourcing organic, and we don’t use the process called HPP.

What’s HPP, you wonder? “High pressure processing.” It’s a technique that lets juice producers extend the shelf life of their product by up to six weeks. Now, that’s rad for sales…but honestly, TJS beelieves that juice is pretty much dead by then. And since we’ve built our biz around the premise that juice should in fact be super fresh, vital, and rich with the enzymes Mother Effen Nature intended, we’d never dream of using HPP to bottle our juice. ‘Cause like our name says…we gots standards.

In our bumblebee-humblebee opinion, HPP is something to avoid. But to be fair—because around here we beelieve in karma—we get why companies use the process. There’s also plenty of lit on the Internets about why and how this process isn’t as damaging as people like us think. But we just happen to think that our way is the best way…both for our WHealth™, and yours. No disrespect to those who do it different. It’s simply not our choice.

The juicery playground is an expansive space. Lots of options out there. Our hope is simply to be a bastion of awesome information so you can make the best decisions possible. Meantime, see you as you stock up on TJS’ raw, cold-pressed, committed-to-organics, knock-your-socks-off-tasty, badass Singleton bottles at Ft. Apache, The Rose, or The Buzz over at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

Since We Thought It, TJS Has Come…To Henderson!

April 16, 2015 By Jen Chase

Patience may be a virtue, but as we await the soft open of our second TJS tomorrow The Hive is mindful of what got us here: positive thinking, a little movie magic and two damn smart women.

In Field Of Dreams, Cutie Kevin Costner—all corn-fed, farmery and hottt-with-three-Ts—walks through his hard-grown corn to the tune of the voices in his head, telling him if he mows his crop, builds a baseball field and hosts an ethereal game-of-all-time, he’ll raise enough dough to pay his mortgage and save his family farm.

"If you build it he will come." It's that kind of positive thinking that if used the right way can help us get through anything...even waiting for a new TJS location to open!

“If you build it he will come.” It’s that kind of positive thinking that if used the right way can help us get through anything…even waiting for a new TJS location to open!

FOD and the messages James Earl Jones delivered in his molasses voice gave us some pivotal rah-rah movie moments that speak to the American dream: work hard, believe in something bigger than you, and you’ll be rewarded. At this point in the post, hopeful happy-ending seekers (like moi) might hear The National Anthem or smell some salty Fenway Franks wafting through the screen, but we all know success ain’t that easy. I mean, it is…but it’s not. Markets crash. People lose their jobs and homes. Some get tumors and die young. Some get sick young and live long. You never know. But pragmatics aside, FOD is based on positive thinking. Toss some inspired thought with blind faith, trust, and the support of solid people around you, the only thing that can get in the way of your success is you.

Mike Dooley has made it his mission to help people change their attitude to change their lives. “Thoughts become things, so make ’em good ones.” “Spiritual accountability.” That stuff. If until now that hasn’t been your flavor of prophecy—if you’re more used to living from a place of reaction than of proactive attraction and working to create your future—I want to talk about Jamie and Marcella.

These two are soon to open The Juice Standard’s second location just 14ish months after their first, and I was thinking about the magnitude of that this morning. Almost 2 years ago I sat with them at Eat in Downtown Las Vegas to review exercises we’d done to reveal the type of ‘tude they wanted to imbue their site and social media. And I so vividly remember sitting across from them, thinking that these two are extremely young and vibrant women who could’ve used their smarts and passion for pretty much anything…yet they decided to bring organic, cold-pressed juice to the Valley because they believe in enhancing the healthy mindset of a city known for extravagance.

That’s not bullshit, Bees. These two are in it to win it…for you. They beelieve in their product, and they beelieve in it because they want to bring it to you. Swear.

All said, J & M didn’t know how Las Vegas would react to The Juice Standard. But they hoped people would embrace the idea of healing the body with what’s put in it, not what meds it’s prescribed. They hoped people would go all in with the “your health is your WHealth” thing and start acting like one’s WHealth is their greatest asset. Hell, bennies aside, they even hoped people would chug TJS juice because it tastes so freaking good. And in its first year, TJS made it.

Have there been setbacks? Youbetcha. Way more places sell juice today than a few years ago, so there’s that. When you’re committed to seasonality, menus have to change when ingredients ebb and flow from availability. All organic, all-the-time takes deep dedication when it would be a lot cheaper easier to use conventional produce. And (sigh of all sighs) as of this writing they’re awaiting a soft open on Saturday 18 April after waitingandwaitingandwaiting for months for their beeautiful buildout to finish! But, Marcella’s and Jamie’s positive thinking and commitment to their honest, authentic desires brought not only success on Ft. Apache (we proudly earned “Best Of Las Vegas” accolades by the Review-Journal!)…starting tomorrow it’s bringing a second location.

“If you build it, he will come.” Positive thinking, blahblahblah. Sounds like a container of caca when you’re in an emotional sinkhole. But for believers, positive thinking is a life preserver for the soul. I’m making this up here, but let’s go ahead and call it a soul preserver. Because in your sacred ring of positivity, you’ll bob up and down through whatever shit you’re wading, and though it won’t be the only thing that saves you, you’ll stay just enough buoyant to float, be seen, and grasp something that will.

Soul preserver. Seriously…just made that up. I like it.

Now go get some juice tomorrow at our brand-spanking-new location Jamie and Marcella are calling “The Rose” (2530 St. Rose Pkwy., Henderson, NV 89074). And as we await that soft open, my gentle hope for you today—and the hope from the rest of The Hive!—is that whether you’re drinking TJS juice or not, make some time to nourish your bod in a way that makes you happy, and do a little day dreamin’ about the good stuff you can work toward attracting to your life. Sit quietly. Breathe. Visualize a moment or a sitch from your life as you’d like it played out like a cut scene from FOD (starring you!) streaming in your head. Because in the slightly more spicy words of the righteous Mike Dooley, thinker of all-things positive: “If thoughts become things, make ’em effing good ones.”

You go, Wayne.

You go, Wayne.

Little Green Lies

April 6, 2015 By Jen Chase

(…And Other Funny Things To Tell Your Kids To Drink Green Juice)

Years ago I was a writer for a media company that had Breville as a client, and my main job was to blog about the best ways to use Breville products here at Food Thinkers…either by sharing recipes or outside-the-box ideas for multitasking its tools.

Look at these cukes! Gorge. Let's teach kids that green really can be good.

Look at these cukes! Gorge. Let’s teach kids that green really can be good.

Breville is well known for its counter-top ovens and tea brewers but is especially popular for its centrifugal juicers. Now, lots of budding home juicers start out with centrifugals because they’re user and wallet friendly. But once juice fans increase their juicy knowledge and learn why bumping and grinding produce in a centrifugal isn’t the best way to squeeze juice from produce (#pressedisbest, and so are masticating machines like the Omega), home juicers often graduate to other kinds of machines (or, cough, buy bypass the whole home-juicing mess and pick up product from TJS). But to be fair, a Breville machine is a great step toward improving one’s WHealth™ and glowing self. No judgment.

Anyhoo. One of the most fun posts I wrote was tailored around a funny little tweet that a parent posted to Twitter responding to something we’d said (can’t remember what). The topic was about getting kids to eat foods they find too icky to touch because they’re green, and the Twitterer’s suggestion for getting more WHealth-friendly avocados into a tot’s little bod was to call it “martian butter.”

Brill, right? In my post, I played off the Tweeter’s superb suggestion by noting that the color of certain foods can be a real hang up for lots of people. Granted, parents hope kids outgrow their arbitrary culinary dislikes by tweendom, but the fact is, we eat with our eyes long before food hits our mouth. So kids are right: If something looks gross, we’ll probably avoid it.

All said, I’m a firm believer that if you can start kids on a WHealthy-eating path from being really young, and if you happen to be blessed with a littleton with a sense of humor, their natural monkey-see-monkey-do’ness can have them downing the same green juice that you do. Just tell ‘em it’s “Martian Juice!”

See? Marvin Martin says to just tell 'em it's "martian juice."

See? Marvin Martin says to just tell ’em it’s “martian juice.”

And have fun with it! Pour it in a sippy cup, or put it in one of those Duralex, perfect-for-little-hands tempered glasses that European kids (and all the children I’ve cared for or nannied) have been drinking out of for eons. That way they’ll be able to see just how green it is.

Wanna test our theory? TJS’ Bee WHealthy is a little less “greeny” than our other green juices thanks to some sweetness from apple, but as we shared in our March 28 Facebook post, kids like Sterling and Maximus Sylver love drinking what their mum and dad do…and their favorite happens to be the very grown up Bee Alkaline.

Sterling, 4 (in the Spidey hat) and Maximus, 2, point to their fave TJS juice: Bee Alkaline.

This is still one of our fave pics in TJS Store Lore: Back in 2015 when this piece first ran, Sterling was 4 (in the Spidey hat) and Maximus was 2, as they pointed to their fave TJS juice (and one of our greenest): Bee Alkaline. For real.

We think it’s the kid-friendly cuke that makes that one so addictive, and its addictiveness is exactly what makes green juice satisfying enough for any man, woman, child…or martian.

Spring Clean Yo’Self With E3Live Shots

April 1, 2015 By Jen Chase

Here on the West coast we’ve already had weeks of warmth (don’t you be hatin’ on us, New England!), but even if you live in a warm-weather clime, doesn’t April feel like spring’s real start? Does to us. And as the weather warms and Mother Nature kicks it into gear, spring is one of those natural annual times when folks think about longer cleanses.

If you’ve read our Friends Who Juice profiles or talked with other Bees who have done TJS cleanses, you might’ve heard that folks feel pretty great when drinking our juice. Honestly, Marcella and Jamie put tons of thought into every recipe to ensure it tastes kickassingly good; but they also deeply considered the order in which each juice should be drunk so you’d feel satisfied (read: not hungry) and live your normal life with as little energy interruption as possible.

Any cleanse length will do your bod a world of good from the break you give it from chewing and digesting all that roughage. But would you believe us if we said TJS is offering yet another way to boost your cleanse’s bennies? Take a looky:

2015.0401_Product Image_ E3Live Algae

Know how we serve Power Shots? They’re sips of goodness we’ve filled with things like turmeric, ginger, apple cider vinegar, oil of oregano and lemon to help support your immune system. Well now we have one with E3Live, this blue-green algae packed with 65 vitamins, minerals, amino acids and essential fatty acids (EFAs) that help increase stamina; reduce stress; speed up post-workout recovery; and support healthy skin, hair and nails. We mix a tablespoon of this magic stuff with some coconut water for your “one-and-done” shooting pleasure, as Jamie likes to say.

The E3Live shot (we haven’t named it yet…maybe “Bee Alive?”), along with our Flu Shots and Wellness Shots are awesome additions to your everyday WHealthy tool kit, but knock back these puppies during a cleanse and without having to bypass chewed-food roughage, their potency gets jacked because they’re more quickly absorbed into your bloodstream. Plus, they’re served in the most adorb little copper cups—with handles!—that’ll make you feel like you’re at the Kentucky Derby or something. Or not. They’re still cute.

So now that it’s April, if you’re considering a-day-or-more cleanse, consider our E3Live shot. Hell, even if you’re not cleansing, your system can always use a little sprucing, spring or not. And since our spring lasts for a hot Vegas minute, get outside and take advantage of these temps. Soon enough we’ll all be heading to Boston.
