Summer Menu Switch-Up

August 4, 2015 By Jen Chase

We heart our Bees and strive long and hard to keep all y’all happy and healthy. Unplanned menu changes can feel like hiccups, but they usually lead to bigger and better things. Tastier ones, too. Here are some subtle changes percolating at The Hive and The Rose during the next month.

‘Bee Effective’ Is ‘Bee Gone’…For Now.

Many of you Bees know that The Juice Standard (TJS) procures organic produce from the most local sources possible…and that living in the desert, that means we depend on our good neighbor California for a sizeable portion of what we press.

In the past few weeks, storms and high temps across The Golden State have wreaked havoc on many crops that go into our recipes. From mildew and insect damage, to internal plant burn and burnage on plant tips and fringe, growers across the region are suffering mightily, which means buyers like us have to re-adjust.

Thankfully, our growers’ crops are allowing us to forge ahead with nearly everything TJS presses! But for the foreseeable (and hopefully brief) future, we’re hitting pause on BEE EFFECTIVE until we can bring it to you made from the healthiest, most nutrient-dense organic produce possible.

‘Bee Happy’ Growing Pains: Come early and often! image (3)

We’ve had an overwhelming demand for BEE HAPPY lately and it’s been selling faster than tickets to a D-Trump stump speech…to the point where we’ve been selling out. Like, a lot. It honestly took us by surprise. We’ve always had crazy-great feedback about BEE HAPPY’s rich cacao-ness and gentle spicing (and have you tried it in cocktails? Ooh-la-laaa….), so the first few times it happened were just kinda like, “Hmm. Vegas must be on a colossal chocolate kick.” But then the sell outs became more regular. Then we heard frustration in some of our loyal bees’ voices. Made us feel all 💔 inside.

So in the interest of full disclosure—beecuase we’re deep into transparency and that mindfulness shee-it—we want you to know we’ve recognized the problem and are upping production of both BEE HAPPY and BEE EXCELLENT…two of TJS’ richest, most satisfying nut milks. That said, don’t be afraid to call ahead and reserve what you’re planning to pick up. Our staff at The Rose and The Hive will be more than happy to oblige….

One of the most important things about being a wholehearted company in the service industry—any industry, really—is “knowing thy audience.” And while we’re sorry to have disappointed any of you bees even for a hot minute, we’re chocking it up to growing pains and better learning the fine art of supply and demand. Thanks for sticking by us and for coming back, even if you didn’t get what you wanted when you wanted it. We aim to please and we’ll always strive to be better so that you may live your healthiest, WHealthiest lives.

Wrap Your Lips Around ‘Bee Kind’

August 4, 2015 By Jen Chase

Limited-edition, sweet-and-spicy recipe is soon-to-be a fan fave. (Who are we kidding? We’re hearing it already is!)

Shhh: Can you hear it? The trumpets? Angels? (Or is it a gaggle of cutie men with high-pitched voices? Unsure.) It’s not in your head, Bees. It’s the netherworld heralding the arrival of our beeautiful, newbee flavor, limited-edition BEE KIND.

Have you ever sipped a Singleton and thought, Hells Bells! How DO they come up with these boss recipes? Sometimes we look at common ailments to see what we can alleviate; but most of the time, recipes are driven by the availability of organic produce (that, and our pairing what we think would taste good together, of course).

Well with BEE KIND, the presenting sitch was a little different.

You’ve heard TJS say, “If it’s not organic, we won’t press it,” but we also won’t press produce unless it’s beyond delicious. And pineapple right now? It’s pretty ick. Since it’s the main squeeze in BEE GRATEFUL—and since we’re in the throes of prime-time watermelon season, yo—we took a hard look at the menu’s seasonality, paused BEE GRATEFUL until the pine is sublime, and decided to birth a new juice.

Enter BEE KIND.Bee-Kind

With sweet heat from a carrot-watermelon-apple-ginger-lemon combo that will keep you sippa-sip-sipping, you’ll actually bee grateful that pineapple needs a time out. Plus, the health bennies of this rosy beauty are boundless:

🙌  carrot’s beta carotene fights heart disease, ocular degeneration and cancer;

🍉  watermelon’s lycopene is a prostate cancer preventative and helps reduce depression and oxidative stress on the brain which can lead to neurological disorders. (Plus, it’s a diuretic and helps reduce belly bloat, too.);

🍎  apple’s Quercetin is a carb-digestion aid;

🙌  ginger reduces air and inflammation in the gassiest of tummies; and

🍋 lemon is extremely alkalizing, and excellent for your digestion and skin.

Ever cried from something delicious? Grab a Singleton of BEE KIND and a hanky and brace yourself.

August 4, 2015 By Jen Chase

Who doesn’t love getting the stuff they love for free? This month, The Juice Standard is making it easy-peasy to achieve your own sense of glowing WHealth™ (while keeping a little extra dough in your pockets) with a promo you media socialites will love.

Bees! So…know how there’s no holiday in August? Well we’ve made one up that lets us celebrate this notoriously steamy summer month, all month long, and you’re gonna help us celebrate.

It’s called the TJS Instagram #WhyICleanse Promo and through Sept. 1, we’re giving away two 3-day cleanses and three 1-day cleanses…but you gots to work for it, Bees!

WHY-I-CLEANSE-1

Here’s what to do:

1) Follow @TheJuiceStandard on Instagram.

2) Instagram your TJS Singletons, Singleton 6-Packs or full-on cleanses in the most beeautiful way possible (we’re suckers for pretty pics), use the hashtag #WhyICleanse and tag @TheJuiceStandard in the pic. Better yet: If you want to show us before-and-after photos, we’ll feature those on the TJS Facebook page throughout the month.

3) In your post’s comments, share your reasons for cleansing and juicing—maybe even why you turn to TJS for your juice or cleansing needs. Whatever you say, give us your most thoughtful feedback about how you use juice to enhance your health, or how you’ve seen your health improve.

That’s it! Winners will be announced via Instagram and Facebook by the end of the day Sept. 1 and will be based on the beauty and creativity of photo coupled with the thoughtfulness of the description.

Get out there and buy your Singletons and cleanses! And make sure you tell us all about it. Who knows…do a good enough job and maybe your next one will be on us.

Friends Who Juice: Mallory Dawn

August 4, 2015 By Jen Chase

The Juice Standard’s Mallory Dawn indeed has a creative director’s soul. Her artist’s spirit emerged in childhood, and while earning her way in the world from her craft, her work kisses the TJS menu boards, chalk drawings and the collateral you Bees see when you walk into our stores. We’re, er, “truly” lucky that her eye for beauty (and her palate for a certain fave TJS flave) helps project the company’s image at every turn.

ALL ABOUT MALLORY

🐝 I grew up in…Ohio.

🐝 Before Las Vegas I used to live in…New York. I moved here in…2008.

🐝 I went to college at…The Ohio State University, and I studied…Product Development & Design, thinking I was going to use my degree to…design clothing (which I did for 8 years).

🐝 In my experience, the biggest misconception about living in Las Vegas is…that you live a crazy life; but, the thing I love most about living here is…the great balance between indulging and grounding yourself.

🐝 Since college I’ve designed for…Abercrombie & Fitch and Guess/Marciano; and I founded my company, Model Comics, where I…make/do/create fine art and graphic design. (But when I was little, I really wanted to be a… a painter in Paris.)

🐝 My mantra or “quote to live by” is: “There is nothing more truly artistic than to love people.” (Vincent Van Gogh)

🐝 What motivates me out of bed in the morn is…the sun.

🐝 If I had to pick a theme song for my life it would be…George Michael’s Freedom (but partially because I love the video!).

🐝 Don’t get me started talking about…science!

🐝 Every day I strive to…grow.

🐝 Chocolate or vanilla? Twist!

ABOUT THE CREATIVE DIRECTOR

🐝 When people ask about what I do as TJS’s Creative Director, I tell them…I handle the visuals.

🐝 Aside from my TJS work…I’m an artist by vocation and I love large canvases and murals.

🐝 I was drawn to art…around the same age I could walk; and I was drawn to it because…it gave me the ability to create a world I wanted to see.

🐝 The thing I love most about seeing life and beauty through the lens of an artist is…the lack of boundaries; and the best thing about seeing beauty everywhere is…you can always find happiness, no matter where you are.

🐝 My favorite advice to onpass to budding female artists is: “You are capable.”

🐝 The best advice I ever received was: “Paint every day.”

🐝 The number one thing I’d tell my younger self is: “Paint every day. You are capable!”

🐝 What scares me are…scary movies!

🐝 Something I do that people say is scary is…travel alone and move with no reason. (A lot of things I’ve done people have found scary!)

🐝 If I could go anywhere TOMORROW, I’d be on a plane to…Turkey, Spain, Germany, Nosara, India, Amalfi Coast. To start.

🐝 My top-three future goals are…buying a farm and building a shared homestead where friends can come stay at no cost to hone their skills, and starting a family.

🐝 The very best part of me is…my heart.

🐝 The one food that’s not good for me that I wish I liked less is…sugar.

MALLORY DAWN, CREATIVE DIRECTOR, ON JUICE

🐝 The first time I realized I loved cold-pressed juice was…when [TJS Co-Founder] Jamie Stephenson used me as a taste tester prior to opening!

🐝 Today, I drink it because…I love the extra energy I get by allowing my digestive system to rest.

🐝 I’m not a cleanser, per se, but this is how I incorporate juice into my life: I like to take one full day every week and half or so and juice all day. Other days I start the day with a green juice, or finish with a lovely nutmilk.

🐝 When people ask, I tell them my fave TJS flave is…Bee True to You.

🐝 When people see me drink green juice and give me face, I want to tell them to go…to TJS and have a complimentary tasting!

🐝 My advice to a newbee juicer is…stay open minded. Tastebuds change through the season (and throughout your lifetime), so even if something wasn’t “bomb.com” the first time you tried it, don’t rule it out. Juice will always be less than doctors’ bills, so take care of your body!

(TJS: Watching this won’t hurt, either. How does that saying go, about keeping the doc away? “An apple a day and a George Michael vid?”)

Friends Who Juice: Q&A With Keli James

June 30, 2015 By Jen Chase

Local real estate agent Keli James is a TJS devotee who didn’t even know she liked cold-pressed juice until she set foot in one of our stores. Now, she’s hooked…and not just for the flavor. Complementing her smart portion control strategy for achieving WHealth and glowing self, read what she says about the secret to her workout success.

All About Keli

I grew up in Iowa, but I moved to Vegas in 1992. What sparked the change was…a military relocation.

In my experience, the biggest misconception about living in Las Vegas is…that it’s a big city. While it is a big city, it’s actually not!

The thing I (not-so) secretly love most about living here is…Las Vegas’ location. It’s close to beaches, mountains…lots of places.

My daily mantra or “quote to live by” is…It all works out in the end. If it hasn’t worked out…it’s not the end!

What motivates me out of bed in the morn is…life!

Don’t get me started talking about…real estate.

Every day I strive to…be the best person I can be.

If I could fly anywhere TOMORROW, I’d SO be on a plane to…Belize.

Keli’s Career

When folks ask about my job and what I do every day, I tell them…I’m a Windermere Prestige Properties realtor.

During my down time I like to…explore new places.

The best part about doing my job in Las Vegas is…helping people.

My favorite advice to give female professionals is…know what you want and where you are going.

The best advice I’ve ever received was…“Live so you can look at yourself in the mirror with your head held high.”

The number one thing I’d tell my younger self is…“Love yourself!”

What scares me is…nothing!

A Woman Who Juices

The first time I realized I loved cold-pressed juice was…when I went into The Juice Standard.

I was approached for the “Friends Who Juice” feature because while at one of the TJS locations one day, I mentioned in passing to TJS Co-Founder and CEO Jamie Stephenson that juicing really helped me bump up a notch my exercise routine (and overall health). Here’s what I meant by that: My body loves the juice. I burn more calories, and I have even more energy. My body is toning up faster.

My fave TJS flave is…I love them all.

My advice to a newbee juicer is…“Try it. You’ll love the way you feel.”

Re-Live A Rosey Opening

June 30, 2015 By Jen Chase

We weren’t exactly shy about our opening a second store, so though it may not be news to you, if you didn’t hit the opening of our Henderson addy (affectionately called “The Rose”), here’s a little re-cap of the night’s events.

We’re sure everyone says this about their parties, but for us, The Rose’s grand opening  really was a night! It was a night to remember that even though something takes tons of planning, perseverance and positivity, it doesn’t mean for a minute that the reward isn’t worth the sweat that went into it.
Rose-Opening-Inside-Square-1  Rose-Opening-Inside-Square-2  Rose-Opening-Inside-Square-3
Before March 2014—for a few years leading up to what we’ve built today, actually—we were squeezing out ideas, gathering data and surrounding ourselves with people smarter than us (think Franklin Roosevelt’s “Brain Trust”…the juice version!). Back then, few would’ve done cartwheels to hear we wanted to open a second location only 14 months after our first. But we did it, and couldn’t be happier.

So take a look at these beeautiful pics of the beeautiful bees who came out to support us. The sangria was sipped, the Champs was poured, music played, and juice shots were aplenty. We were thrilled that so many people joined us for what turned out to be one sweet, juicy celebration!

A Book And A Pack: A Patriotic Giveaway

June 30, 2015 By Jen Chase

You know how when you read something you love, sometimes you want others to love it, too? The Juice Standard is giving back to the community this July 4 by giving out a specialty freebie that will help you bees think…while you drink. Read on.

If you follow our Facebook or Instagram posts around holidays with something to do with freedom, you might’ve sensed that The Juice Standard (TJS) would bleed red, white and blue if we cut her open. Probably blue-green algae, actually, since we’re a juicery and all. We just love this country and what it stands for.

So far this year we’ve reflected our patriotism in our “funanthropy” when we handed out juice at our local fire and police station on Memorial Day, and in May, when we collected your generously donated dollars from glass Singleton returns for the Wounded Warrior Project. And with July 4 being the momma of U.S. freedom-ringing holidays, TJS co-founder Jamie Stephenson wanted to (literally) spread the word of one of her favorite authors, Eric Greitens. Particularly, his book Resilience.
Resilience Book Cover

Resilience is Greitens story of being a Navy SEAL and using his experience to help teach others that hardship isn’t something one “bounces back” from, but is something that everyone can learn to move through and navigate. Not unlike many Buddhist teachings that advocate leaning into our pain as much as we embrace our happy, in the wise words on Greitens’ website, “…there is a path through pain to wisdom, through suffering to strength, and through fear to courage, if we have the virtue of resilience.”

You know how when you read something you love, sometimes you want others to love it, too? Jamie’s wholehearted passion for Greitens’ work means that from July 1-5 (but not the 4th because TJS is closed that day), the first 100 bees who purchase a Singleton Six-Pack—your choice of any six juices or nut milks—will receive a free copy of Resilience that has been personally signed by Greitens, courtesy of The Juice Standard.
IMG_1718

The book retails for $17-$26, but if you’re already a Greitens groupie, his John Hancock on the inside cover is beyond worth. We encourage you to read it yourself but also hope you’ll consider picking up a six-pack and paying the book forward to someone in your world who you think will appreciate it.

Our road to WHealth and glowing self should edge a little beeyond our individual selves, don’t you think? We hope you’ll take advantage of this treat. And remember: #ItTakesAHive.

New Menu+ Remedies=TJS Helping You

June 13, 2015 By Jen Chase

Our menu’s new “juice remedies” and their easy-peasy codes are helping bees relieve (almost) anything life throws at us.

“C’mon, Life! Show us what you’ve got! Give us your germs, your fatigue and your post-workout aches. Give us your hangry-ass pangs, your sniffly allergy noses and the feeling that you might—just might—be getting and early visit from Aunt Flow.”

So that’s basically what our new menu would say if it could talk as it wagged a finger at all the health drama that tries to hold us back. Because along with a pretty big pair of sassy pants our newly designed menus are sporting a cheat sheet that beeautifully hollas out which TJS juices are good for what. Just pick up a menu and flip it to the back. On the far right there’s a handy list with an even handier, color-coded, acronym-filled key giving you at-a-glance access to what each TJS juice can help alleviate.

Here's a snapshot of our new menu. We hope our thoughtful 'Juice Remedies' help lead you toward your very best selves, no matter how you feel.

TJS’ “Juice Remedies.” We hope our thoughtful ‘Juice Remedies’ help lead you toward your very best selves, no matter how you feel.

Full disclosure, here: As it is for other juiceries and throughout some alternative-therapy industries—think essential oils, herbs or adaptogenics—TJS can’t claim that cold-pressed juice will full-on heal you (even though we cheekily say on our menu disclaimers that we know it often can!). But we can say that TJS-suggested remedies may (ahem) alleviate what ails you. And that’s what our little key points out.

So: If you’re feeling a little ick and want to, well, not, pick up a menu and chat up one of the wholehearted staffers behind the counter at The Hive or The Rose. They’ll help you not only navigate what tastes fantabulously good, but will point out what’s fantabulously good for your body in the areas of…

  • Immunity Boosting (IB)
  • Allergy Relief (A)
  • Meal Replacement (MR)
  • Post Workout (PW)
  • Extra Energy (EE)

Friends Who Juice—Q&A With Marcella Williams-Melnichuk

June 3, 2015 By Jen Chase

The Juice Standard’s COO and co-founder dishes on her juicy passion, the tunes that make the company sing and how you never EVER ask a mom-preneur to pick her fave store.

Marcella-header

All About The Co-Founder

I grew up in…Oregon and Arizona but I finished and continued my education in Vegas, which is one more reason why Vegas is home.

I used to live in…Yuma (yes: that podunk Arizona town by the border where the only thing to do is get in trouble in Mexico), and I moved here to stay in…1996. What sparked the change was…family, and the booming economy Vegas had to offer.

In my experience, the biggest misconception about living in Las Vegas is…that we all work/live/play on the Strip. Couldn’t be further from the truth. The only time I’m there is when someone is visiting and we are “playing tourist.”

(…but, the thing I secretly love most about living here is…) the sudden blossom of local business and the local love and support of people who are trying to make a difference, one square foot at a time.

My expertise spans motherhood, culinary operational standards, and entrepreneurship; but when I was little, I *really* wanted to be…a gymnast. I remember watching a movie about Nadia Comăneci and seeing Mary Lou Retton and later Dominique Dawes (1996). I remember wanting to choreograph my own floor routine and practicing in my living room.

My daily mantra or “quote to live by” is…“Remember: It all works out in the end.”

What motivates me out of bed in the morn is…the fact that I get to do what I love, which is to help people.

If I had to pick a theme song for The Juice Standard it would be…Hakuna Matata from Lion King (LOL). Or maybe What A Feeling from Flashdance.

A hidden talent of mine that gets people giggling when they find out I can do is…karaoke. But maybe they are giggling because it’s not really a talent. (LOL)

DON’T get me started talking about…bees or the golden ratio because we could be here for days.

Every day I strive to…be better than I was yesterday.

The health habit I’m most teased about is…washing my hands and reminding others to do the same…especially after they are on their phones. In a word: Eww.

Chocolate or vanilla? Chocolate. Dark, preferably, because it’s good for the heart.

The Boss’ Jobs

When people ask about my job at The Juice Standard and what we do every day, I tell them…I help people feel better.

The charity I hold deepest to my heart is…March of Dimes, because I was there with two preemie babies in the NICU and remember the daily struggles and fears as a new mom.

The perk I enjoy most about being my own boss is…the flexible schedule.

The best advice I enjoy giving to female professionals is…don’t listen to anyone negative. Believe in yourself and go for it!
The best advice I’ve ever received was…learn not to take anything personally. No one is doing [x-thing] to me.

The number one thing I’d tell my younger self is…well, there are two things: Travel more, and yes…you will do something awesome!

Something that scares me is…my kids growing up and my somehow missing it.

Something I do that people say is scary is…go back and re-read about my so-called “hidden talent.” (LOL)

If I could go anywhere tomorrow, I’d so be on a plane to…a beach. Any tropical beach would do, where I could sink my toes in the sand, listen to the waves crash and hear the laughter of my children in the background as they make sand castles.
My top-three goals for TJS are…to create a product with standards (see what I did there?) that truly makes it better than all the rest; to raise awareness about the importance of organic farming, cooking and eating; and to raise awareness and motivate people to help save the bees!

The very best part of me is…my sense of humor! I love to laugh and make others laugh, too!

The one food that’s so good for me that I wish I loved more is…honestly, I really love all fruits and veggies.

True or false: Answering the “Of-your-two-locations-which-one-is-your-favorite-location” question is like naming your favorite child. You just don’t do it. True…and, impossible. Both hold very dear spots in my heart and each is very different.

(So, we’ve gotta ask: OF your two locations, which is your fave. [wink]) LOL! I plead the 5th.

And of your kids, who’s your fave? (Double wink.) I’ll actually answer that one: I’m one of those people who can actually and honestly say I do not have a favorite. When the twins were born I saw Damian go blue and they had to resuscitate him. For a couple of years I had this strange connection to him, but I think it was more a fear of losing him than anything else. It faded though, thank goodness, and now I just love them all very differently.

(The Humble Bee: Wow. Didn’t think you’d touch that with a 10-footer. Brave. Honest. We love it.)

The most rewarding thing about founding The Juice Standard has been…hearing the customers speak so highly of us. I’m so proud to be part of something that makes peoples’ lives better.

Something that goes unreported in the media about cold-pressed juice that I just WISH I could straighten out is…the back-and forth attitude about whether organic is legitimate. If it’s not organic, it’s just not worth it.

In my opinion, the biggest misconception about juicing is…that all cold- pressed juice is the same. It’s not. Juice that’s preserved using the HPP process has up to a 6-week shelf life. YUCK! How fresh is that?

In my opinion, the most challenging thing about starting a juice company in Las Vegas has been…sourcing organic produce. But we did it. And we continue to do it. So when a company claims it “presses organic when possible,” it is full of shit!

In our humblebee-bumble opinion, what truly sets The Juice Standard from the rest is…our standards. We have them, and they’re high. Which is why we wouldn’t press watermelon until mid-May despite the call for our fan-favorite watermelon-cucumber-lemon juice, Bee Chill. Organic watermelons weren’t ready yet, so we waited. It was worth it.

True or False: Some days I could just SWEAR I feel a little chunk of pulp in my hair…but then I realize I don’t have to make juice at home anymore because I own two juice bars. TRUE! But then I look on my ceiling and there it is a pinkish-purple reminder that beets stain and I really should paint.

Gal On Juice

The first time I realized I loved cold-pressed juice was…when I started making it myself.

Today, I drink it because…I don’t have time to chew that much produce.

This is how often I do cleanses and when we like to do them: Seasonally, to help curb any bad cravings and get back on my health track.

The one veggie I can’t stand in a juice is…I’m not sure, but I probably woudn’t care for juiced okra.

My kids were 3 years old when they started drinking green juice, and they were 4 years old when they realized they liked it. (That’s also when they realized there were things in their juice that they didn’t like but they still drank it.)

My best advice for getting kids to try new foods is…don’t force them to eat it all. They just have to eat one bite, and each time you make a new dish (or the same one), just have them try it. Eventually they will like it, they just have to acquire the taste.

When I’m not drinking TJS juice, my favorite cocktail is…Champagne or a beautiful vintage imported red wine.

What made me know I wanted juice as a part of my healthy lifestyle was…when my kids became picky eaters and I had to sneak in produce.

When people ask, I tell them my fave TJS flave is…oh, it’s impossible to say! It’s like asking me which kid is my favorite and we’ve pretty much covered that. (LOL)

The funniest thing that ever happened to me while drinking juice OR when I was on a cleanse was…when it went down the wrong pipe and out my nose.

When people see me drink green juice and give me a face, I want to tell them…to go do a juice tasting! TJS offers complimentary ones to anyone who asks!
My advice to a newbee juicer is…work your way up to the greens.

I respect my partner Jamie because…without her vision and sense of style, TJS wouldn’t be what it is today.

Juice Yourself Healthy…With Ginger

June 3, 2015 By Jen Chase

You’ve probably long known ginger is a powerhouse in the healthy lifestyle department, but do you know why? Decades of research backs this root’s benefits. Here’s why TJS loves it (and why you should, too).

Our Wellness and Flu Shots are just two ways to spice up your life (and health) the TJS way...with ginger!

Our Wellness and Flu Shots are just two ways to spice up your life (and health) the TJS way…with ginger!

TJS’ CEO and Co-Founder Jamie Stephenson is our resident juice-u-cator when it comes to keeping us honest about the bennies in our products’ ingredients. But since even she (and the rest of us!) have to look stuff up every now and then, a recent surf of the Internets pulled up a not-so-recent yet still-so-relevant study about one heck of a powerful little root. And as usual, one bite from the ol’ Information Apple led us down a path to more research and taught us even more about one of The Juice Standard’s most relied upon ingredients: Ginger.

BACKSTORY ON A RIGHTEOUS ROOT

The article that really opened our eyes—Ginger Inhibits Cell Growth and Modulates Angiogenic Factors In Ovarian Cancer Cells—lives at PubMed.gov, a site maintained by the U.S. National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health in Washington, D.C. Though written in 2007, the abstract calls out ovarian cancer as “the most lethal gynecologic malignancy” and the fifth highest cause of death by cancer in women.

Scary.

But once you get over the article’s fright factor, it’s enlightening to learn how ginger may potentially prevent the development of a certain pathway in an ovarian cancer cell thanks to its anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties.

Not-so-scary.

That spicy research is far from isolated as ginger has been the focus of medical studies for decades. In the abstract of a 2005 study, Ginger—An Herbal Medicinal Product With Broad Anti-Inflammatory Actions, it’s noted that since the 70s, ginger has been identified as an “herbal medicinal product that shares pharmacological properties with non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs” and that it “modulates biochemical pathways activated in chronic inflammation.” All that from something you can pick up from your local grocery store.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU

The mentions above substantiate what The Juice Standard has long beelieved:

The road to WHealth and glowing self is paved with the tops of juice bottles…not bottles of meds.

Course we beelieve there’s a place for Western medicine. A huge place. But isn’t it a good feeling to know there’s a food-based tool like ginger that when added to our let’s-keep-ourselves-healthy arsenal, we can stave off disease-causing inflammation? Isn’t it a good feeling to know that YOU, our Beeautiful Juicers, may choose to control some of your own health destiny?

Yepper. We think so, too.

HELP US HELP YOU TAKE ACTION

Crafty ‘Juicetails’ For Father’s Day

June 3, 2015 By Jen Chase

He may have said, “Don’t play with your food!” but we’re pretty sure if Dad saw these playful juice-based cocktails in the offing it would’ve been more like, “Fill-er up, Kiddo!”

The Juice Standard was psyched back in April when Vegas Seven magazine’s Xania Woodman paired her mixology smarts with a TJS Singleton Six-Pack to concoct some luscious libations. It wasn’t the first time we had some Seven love. That was here back in 2013. But Ms. Woodman had the good graces to write about her tasty exploits here  and for that we’re grateful. So for your free press (boom!) and your delicious suggestions, Ms. Woodman…we salute you beecause you juice.

But now it’s June, Bees, and this month we’re featuring our own cocktalian machinations to honor the gents in our lives who’ve gone out of their way to show us what being a real man is all about. And while we love the Dad bod as much as the next bee, for the pops trying to keep it (healthy) real while indulging in all that’s deliciously sacred in this world alcohol, beehold…TJS Juicetails for Dad’s Day. Drink up, sweet men.

The Bee On Vacay

...By far the healthiest piña colada you'll ever make, and the easiest vacation-in-a-glass a Dad'll ever take.

…By far the healthiest piña colada you’ll ever make, and the easiest vacation-in-a-glass a Dad’ll ever take.

Spirulina’s grassy quality in TJS’ Bee Excellent lends some pretty interesting depth (and health) to what would be an otherwise calorie-laden riff on a piña colada. Please: Don’t skimp on the lime zest topper. Makes a difference. And for God’s sake, ain’t Dad worth it?

Makes 1 drink.

Ingredients

  • ¾ ounce coconut rum (Trader Vics’ is coconutty and not too sweet)
  • 1 ounce TJS’ Bee Excellent nut milk, chilled
  • ½ tablespoon fresh organic lime juice
  • Lime zest to garnish

Method

In a shaker with ice, combine the rum, Bee Excellent and lime juice, shake vigorously, and pour over a short glass filled with ice. Using a microplane, gently grate the skin of a washed organic lime. Take care to only grate green and avoid the white pith.

Bee On Vacay. Don't skimp on the zest. It makes it. Really.

Frozen Mexican Haute Chocolate

Creamy, cold, spicy, sweet...complexity at its best, just like Dad.

Creamy, cold, spicy, sweet…complexity at its best, just like Dad.

Papa gotta sweet tooth? Papa like a little Mexican? Kids love TJS’ Bee Happy but it goes to a whole new level with some heat and spice. And alcohol. Patrón XO Café Incendio is the brand’s latest baby that mixes rich chocolate flavor with ancho chili. Not for the faint hearted, if you like-a da spice, add more Patrón. Too hottt-with-three-Ts to handle? Add more nut milk. Easy peasy.

Makes 1 drink.

Ingredients

  • ½ ounce Patrón Incendio
  • 1.5 ounces TJS’ Bee Happy nut milk, chilled
  • One pinch each cardamom and allspice (optional)
  • Freshly ground black pepper for garnish (optional)

Method

In a shaker with ice, combine the tequila, Bee Happy and spices (if using), shake vigorously for at least 30 seconds, and pour into a chilled martini glass. Top with a grind of freshly ground black pepper, or serve and sip as-is.

Like with the Bee On Vacation's lime zest, adding a sprinkle of spice or the suggested grind of black pepper keeps this drink way interesting.

The Buzz-Inga

Chocolate and coffee are two great tastes that taste great together, but if Dad likes his coffee straight up, swap out Bee Happy for Bee Magnificent or Bee I'm Possible.

Chocolate and coffee are two great tastes that taste great together, but if Dad likes his coffee straight up, swap out Bee Happy for Bee Magnificent or Bee I’m Possible.

Kahlua? We hardly knew ya. TJS staff at The Hive and The Rose suggest adding espresso to nut milks for added energy, but seriously…energy never tasted this good! Patrón steps it up with its XO Café, a coffee-laden liqueur that’s great on its own but better in chocolatey Bee Happy. If Dad likes his coffee straight up, sub Happy for something more vanilla-y like Bee Magnificent or Bee Legendary.

Makes 1 drink.

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce Patrón XO Café
  • 2 ounces Bee Happy (for mocha) or Bee Magnificent or Bee Legendary (for coffee)

Method

Similar to the Frozen Mexican Haute Chocolate, in a shaker with ice, combine the tequila and your nut milk of choice and shake vigorously for at least 30 seconds. Pour into a chilled martini glass, and serve.

The Bee WHealthy™ Cocktail

There's a ton of play in this recipe, so take Dad's palate into consideration and experiment since variety is the spice of life (said every dad, everywhere).

There’s a ton of play in this recipe, so take Dad’s palate into consideration and experiment since variety is the spice of life (said every dad, everywhere…or maybe just mine). Love you, Daddy!

Martini purists loathe fancy-schmancy takes on the classic martini, so whatever you do, don’t just throw stuff in a shaker and call it something it’s not. This, Bees, is a cocktail, and a forgiving one at that. Use the recipe as a guideline, but tweak to your palate toward more vodka, juice, bitters, or anything else that tickles Dad’s fancy.

Makes 1 drink.

Ingredients

  • Equal parts best-quality vodka (we like Tito’s and Ketel one) and TJS Bee WHealthy™

Optional add-ins:

  • Dash celery salt
  • Fee Brothers Old Fashioned Aromatic Bitters or Angostura Bitters
  • Fee Brothers Lemon bitters
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Dash Tabasco sauce, chipotle version

Method

In a shaker with ice, combine the vodka, Bee WHealthy™ and your choice of add in and shake vigorously for at least 30 seconds. Pour a sip into a glass and adjust for taste before serving in a chilled martini glass.

Bee Chill Is A Special Summer Sipper

June 2, 2015 By Jen Chase

Eating seasonable is just plain reasonable…and this is one TJS special that will keep your summer sipping interesting.

We love consistency just like the next bee, but part of the joy of sourcing The Juice Standard’s organic produce, nuts, grains and seeds (from as many local purveyors as we can) is that we get to weave flavors in an out of our menu as the season allows. And for summer, that means one of our favorites is back in the rotation.

WHAT: Bee Chill

This beeautiful juice isn't just delicious...it even looks pretty in the bottle!

This beeautiful juice isn’t just delicious…it even looks pretty in the bottle!

WHY: Packed with super-hydrating watermelon, cooling cucumber and alkalizing lemon that helps undo some of the acidic hurt we suffer from digesting processed foods, not only does Bee Chill help keep your insides clean but it’s the antidote to heat no matter where you live. How? Bee Chill’s main ingredient is watermelon…and if all you ever thought was that this quintessential picnic add-on was just a go-to portable fruit, watermelon has some unsung health bennies:

We bee grateful for orgs like OrganicFacts.net that help keep us juice-u-cated about the produce we freaking love to press!

We bee grateful for orgs like OrganicFacts.net that help keep us juice-u-cated about the produce we freaking love to press!

  • It’s low in sugar (so it’s good for diabetics);

  • It flushes out kidneys (which helps keep them in good health); and,

  • It has decent amount of vitamins and minerals that make it a sweet treat that’s actually good for you.

HEALTHY THINKING BEYOND THE BOTTLE: If you haven’t already, something you’ll notice when you start replacing processed sugars or other foods with tasty bits from Mother Nature (like watermelon) is that your body will start craving the new tastes…but if you’re smart, it won’t just be your body that does the craving!

TJS COO and Co-Founder Marcella Williams-Melnichuk has had her kids on a healthy diet for so long that when they were littletons, they thought of dates as candy! Our point? With enough exposure, drinks like Bee Chill and others in the TJS repertoire can taste just as good as that craptastic carbonated canned stuff we thought was a treat when we were kids. So when you can, see what you can swap out of your everyday repertoire and swap in from ours. From hardcore organic green juice to more newbee flavors with natural sweetness from organic carrot and apple (and even honey and spices in our nut milks), there’s something for everyone with an open mind and an open mouth.

(And seriously: Just THINK what our health would be like today if one of the most iconic ads in all of ad-dom featured colorful, juice-filled bottles?)

We really think we can change our drinking habits a bottle at a time. Don’t you?

TJS Weekend Reads For The Busy Bee

May 22, 2015 By Jen Chase

Green Kitchen Travels is just one in a kickass stack of books at The Rose waiting for you to pick up and flip as you sip. Best enjoyed with something green and tasty like a Bee True To You.

Green Kitchen Travels is just one in a kickass stack of books at The Rose waiting for you to pick up and flip as you sip. Best enjoyed with something green and tasty like a Bee True To You.

Looking for some weekend reads? Pre-summer brain food? For today’s busy bee, taking a personal time out for a little written-word R&R can mean anything from catching up on food blogs to high-thought books about organics’ regulations…and that range was WAY proven at the Friday morn weekly Team TJS meeting, where as we helped each other plan and prioritize our contribution to the company for the week ahead, we snuck in a little talk time about what we’re reading.

We’re all pretty like-minded…but man, hello diverse! Here are the four titles we realized we’re groovin’ on that we thought we’d mention to you lovelies. Beecause sharing is caring.

Happy weekend, Bees!

WHO…Jamie, co-founder and CEO

SHE’S READING… Fruitless Fall: Collapse of the Honey Bee and the Coming Agricultural Crisis (Rowan Jacobsen)

IT’S ABOUT…the incredibly sad/scary/insert your favorite gutting adjective about what caused honeybees to go AWOL in spring 2007. Citing the plight by its many names (colony collapse disorder; mad bee disease; bee auto-immune deficiency) and using facts and plain-speak like a good investigative food journo should, (plus a lotta bee love), Jacobsen explains how neurotoxin-laced pesticides and even antibiotics used by conventional farmers on flower crops across the country are sickening the bees we need to help pollinate our every three bites of food. If you ever needed a reason for eating organic, Jacobsen does you a solid with his 288 pages.

WHY READ? Change needs to happen when it comes to how we view organic farming, says Jamie. Hard not to feel doomsdayish about the plight of innocent bees. But there’s so much hope if writers like Jacobsen help influence future generations of mindful eaters. His most important audience? The farmers and regulators at national levels who have the ability to keep this from beecoming a decades-long catastrophee.

WHO…Mallory, creative director

SHE’S READING…Green Kitchen Travels: Healthy vegetarian food inspired by our adventures by David Frenkiel and Luise Vindahl.

IT’S ABOUT…So there’s this couple. And they’re new parents. And they have a crazy-popular blog where they write crazy-popular posts of food that’s beautiful to eat and look at (Vindahl is a photog and the book and blog sure show it). This second book of theirs features 90 recipes they’ve enjoyed during travels around the world. Vegetarian and/or vegan and almost entirely gluten-free, the dishes stand strong alone; but coupled with the artistry and total passion this duo puts into sharing their love of healthful, mindfully good food, well it’s worth grabbing a green TJS juice and hunkering down for some un-guilty pleasure reading.

WHY READ? Um, did you not just read the above? If for no other reason, read it why Mal is: she loves the story and the recipes.

BONUS BOOM! If you get your juice at The Rose on St Rose Parkway there’s a copy on the communal reading shelf. So go ahead. Sip and flip.

***

WHO…Marcella, co-founder and COO

SHE’S READING…Mating in Captivity: Unlocking Erotic Intelligence by Esther Perel.

IT’S ABOUT…Get yer mind outta the gutter. Yes, “erotic” is in the title but this book is so deep. So. Perel’s a psychotherapist and her long-heralded book is clear and direct in presenting insights about coupledom and sexuality, and how to balance the two. Gays, straights, marrieds, singletons…this book is about conflict resolution and finding peaceful balance in a relationship, and its lessons, if learned early, can help alter your lifelong lens on love and the intimacy sought (and hopefully found) between two people.

WHY READ? Honestly, we hear about this relationship shit on the fly but often don’t develop an understanding about it until we’re in trouble: desire requires distance but intimacy needs proximity, or what’s it takes to keep a spark in a relationship. Whether you have an A+ relationship or you’re looking for one, there’s no bad time to pick up this puppy, and a refresher will always make you better. Ask Marce. She’s so wise.

WHO…Jen, content director

SHE’S READING…Kundalini Yoga, The Flow of Eternal Power by Khakti Parwha Kaur Khalsa

IT’S ABOUT…With the heading, “A Simple Guide to the Yoga of Awareness,” this book is like Kundalini For Dummies. Khalsa was taught by Yogi Bhajan, Ph.D., the daddy of kundalini and the gem responsible for bringing it to the West, and it’s written with the same humor and lightness Bhajan’s teachings are known for. A flavor of yoga that weaves song, chant and meditation with movement to increase the body’s kundalini energy, it’s an easy-to-follow guide covering how we can yoga ourselves toward ultimate health and wellness.

WHY READ? Kundalini is an acquired taste, but don’t be fooled: it can be way more aerobic of body and mind than it seems at first blush. And for anyone who’s dabbled, this book lends deeper meaning to what’s done in a class. Essential for anyone who’s hooked on kundalini as a tool for navigating the day while connecting to something higher…both in the Universe and in ourselves.

Juice Myth Debunked: Juice vs. Smoothie

May 18, 2015 By Jen Chase

In the juice vs. smoothie smackdown, the winner…is you. Here’s how.

Some of the awesome managers at The Hive (the Ft. Apache store) gave Team TJS a heads up about a question they’ve fielded a lot lately, and it’s one that Marcella hears a lot, too, and wanted cleared up:

WHAT’S BETTER: COLD-PRESSED JUICE OR SMOOTHIES?

Truth is, they’re pretty opposite: one has soluble fiber (juice), one has insoluble fiber (smoothies); one’s a known meal replacer; one’s the Flusher of All-Things Nastybad we store in our gut…yet if made right—with more veggies than fruit, more produce than protein-pumping additives—both do your bod a solid and are great for increasing your produce intake. But it does depend on how you want to achieve your #MissionNutrition:

Our ubiquitous Bee WHealthy. Can't even tell you how many pounds of produce are packed into this puppy. (Say that 10 times fast.)

Our ubiquitous Bee WHealthy™. Can’t even tell you how many pounds of produce are packed into this puppy. (Say that 10 times fast.)

JUICING extracts most of the insoluble fiber from produce, leaving the soluble kind behind. Insoluble fiber helps create stool and makes it bulky so it moves food through the system. In the absence of insoluble fiber, and with less need to move that shit on out (literally), drinking juice makes it easy for the bod absorb nutrients into the bloodstream because it doesn’t make the digestive system work so hard. It’s also why juicing may be better for some folks with digestive problems. Think of it as a kinder, gentler way to eat your veggies.

SMOOTHIES contain all the insoluble fiber that juice is missing, so they keep you fuller, longer.

JUICING is perfect for when the goal is to consistently flush your system with nutrients as you rid your bod of what’s left from the “reward foods” we love to enjoy (and, yes: even scratch-made baked goods, homemade ice cream and craft cocktails leave behind a trail of nasties). Thank juice’s soluble fiber for that and for absorbing water in our systems, acting like a pre-biotic to help build up good bacteria in the gut, and helping to regulate blood sugar.

This was the limited-run "Bee Mine" from last February. Pretty, huh? You can see that smoothies are thicker and make an excellent meal replacement...but be mindful of hidden sugar.

This was the limited-run “Bee Mine” from last February. You can see that smoothies are thicker and make an excellent meal replacement…but watch hidden sugar.

SMOOTHIES can act as a dependable meal replacement when made with healthy protein powder or low-fat dairy or dairy replacement like nutmilks.

JUICING lets you to consume the equivalent of POUNDS of produce in one easy-to-sip glass at a time thanks to the removal of the produce’s harder-to-digest cellulose.

SMOOTHIES allow you to effortlessly ingest things you enjoy having in your diet like supplement powders, adaptogens, seeds and ground nuts…most of which wouldn’t typically taste as good going down the hatch if they were mixed with veggie juice.

(See? Different yet beeautifully the same in that they both nourish the body. Just be sure to always opt for veggie-heavy recipes since sugar will never leave you as light and lithe as greens.)

And since we’re equal-opportunity product promoters here, now’s a great time to remind that, yes, The Juice Standard is a raging cold-pressed juice bar that sources organic produce, nuts, seeds and grains for its recipes…but we also sport four regular-menu smoothies—Green Is Good, the BFF, Protein Power, and Berry Antioxidizing—for when you think that sipping your meal will do your body good. You know. Like this guy taught us.

3-Day Cleanse Incentive Is Almost A Memory

May 6, 2015 By Jen Chase

All May, anyone who’s bought a three-day cleanse has gotten a few little extras: a little coffee, a little cash and a whole lotta cleansing. But the incentive is almost gone!

Intrigued? It goes a lil’ something like this….

Pictured is the TJS Green Standard Cleanse. What's better than getting yourself all clean on the inside and having a few extra dollars in your pocket, to boot?

Pictured is the TJS Green Standard Cleanse. What’s better than getting yourself all clean on the inside and having a few extra dollars in your pocket, to boot?

WHAT: Ca$h+Coffee

WHEN: FOUR MORE DAYS (May 28-31)

HOW IT WORKS: With every three-day cleanse you buy before 1 June, on the fourth day, bring back your 18 rinsed bottles for an $18 refund (that’s $1 for every rinsed glass bottle), plus your choice of a free BEE INVINCIBLE or RAW CACAO MOCHA as a thank you from TJS. Coinciding with our Military Month “FUN-AN-THROPY” effort, we’ll wholeheartedly accept donations of any amount toward our collection for Wounded Warrior Project.

WHY: The three-dayer is TJS’ most popular cleanse, so what better time to encourage you spring sippers to juice with us. (Think of juice like soap for your insides. Yes! “Insides Soap!” Soap that tastes delicious and nothing like soap!)

As for the free Bee Invincible or Raw Cacao Mocha, easing off a cleanse should include gentle chewing like raw or steamed produce and some good fats…then, a move toward gently cooked grains, and finally, protein (if you eat it). But for folks who love their coffee and can’t wait the three-day breakup to be over, our Bee Invincible is the healthiest cuppa in all the land. (And if you’re crazy for cacao, the Raw Cacao Mocha is for you.)

Treats are sweet! Buy a three-day cleanse before 1 June and your bod, belly (and pocket!) will reap the rewards.

Treats are sweet! Buy a three-day cleanse before 1 June and your bod, belly (and pocket!) will reap the rewards.

What’s in ‘em? Made from two scrumptious espresso pulls of Mothership Coffee’s locally roasted beans, plus a combo of grass-fed butter, ghee and coconut oil (you choose what goes in), the healthy fats in Bee Invincible slow caffeine absorption and help your bod avoid the typical spike-and-crash like a sugar- and dairy-laden coffee drink might.

Prefer chocolate in your coffee? The Raw Cacao Mocha has the same espresso plus raw cashew milk, cacao and honey, plus cinnamon and some steam. When it’s all blended up, you’ll never miss a sugar-laden something ending in “ino” ever again.

Seriously: What price is WHealth? Offer good at at both “The Hive” (4555 S. Ft. Apache, Rd., Suite 144, Las Vegas, NV 89147) and “The Rose” (2530 St. Rose Pkwy. Henderson, NV 89074) all month long.

A TJS Fast Is All About Support

May 6, 2015 By Jen Chase

We’re not into root-a-toot-tooting our own horns over here, but when we’re proud, we’re proud. And anyone who’s fasted with The Juice Standard knows that the minute you make up your mind to drink ours versus theirs is when the support starts. And support is one of the things we’re praised for most. Grin.

Now, beelievers know that fasts (or “cleanses,” if you prefer that word but we’re going with fast) purge toxins, fats, metals, free radicals, and other ick stuff from your system. But what if you’re on the fence, anyway? Beehold: A TJS Cheat Sheet about why juice fasts are good but TJS juice fasts are best.

TJS Green Standard Cleanse

TJS Green Standard Cleanse

WHY FAST?

  • Innards feel “off” and you can’t pinpoint why?
  • Late-night, work-travel room service weighing you down?
  • Indulging at restaurants more than usual?
  • Crave the clarity from sipping pure nutrition?

Disparate answers that all happen to be right. From weight loss and glowy skin to increased energy and inner reflection, juice fasts of one to however-many days you choose calm our insides (and often busy brains, too) by resting the digestive tract from breaking down whole foods and letting it almost effortlessly absorb the nutrient-dense goodness in cold-pressed juice.

WHY FAST…WITH TJS?

Keepin’ it real, here:

1) We’re organic. Not a little organic. Not kinda. Not organic except for when conventional is cheaper. We source organic like these guys are farmers. And not many juice bars can say that and we’re mad proud we can.

2) We’re local. We beelieve freshness is a virtue and instead of cleansing with juice from another part of the country, we cold press what Nevada and its surrounding states so bountifully provide so you may drink local. You’re most certainly welcome.

3) We’re bomb with customer service. Seriously: The best reason to juice fast with TJS is that we all care. Mallory puts a you-can-do-it love note in your juice bag just like momma used to write. Marcella is crazy-ass present at both locations, ever ready to answer questions. And Jamie’s done these fasts so often there’s nothing she won’t take the time to try to answer based on her personal experience alone (and her research skillz rock).

Caring. We all just reallyeffingcare.

We’re not a pop-up. Not a fad. Not a company run by people removed from their product. We are our product. We have standards. And we hope our juice standards are yours.

We Salute Our Troops

May 6, 2015 By Jen Chase

Military. Soldiers. Strength. Freedom. How do those words make you feel? Do you have friends or fam who have fought for their country? If so, we don’t even know them but can say without measure that we appreciate their selflessness.

United We Juice

United We Juice

Whatever it is that moves someone to fight for the rights of people they’ve never met is enigmatic at best, and something The Juice Standard honors so deeply that this month, when we were looking to put our philanthropy where our heart is, we chose Wounded Warrior Project. You’ve probably seen the ads on TV or at McCarran: it’s the national org that started as a program to provide comfort items to soldiers who returned home wounded from their tours in Afghanistan in Iraq, and it’s morphed into a full-on, long-term assistance effort supporting any wounded service member as they acclimate to post-military life.

Here’s the deal: In May, for all you beeautiful juicers who are already so good about recycling your glass Singletons for $1, we’ll happily welcome you to donate your buckeroo to our collection for the Wounded Warrior Project cause. By month’s end, we’ll donate in the name of the company from every thoughtful dollar given.

Think about it: Strange countries and scary places. Building camaraderie with folks who might not make it. Danger. The unknown. And for what?

Not for what. For whom. And by for whom we mean for us.

Whether their need is mental, physical or spiritual, once soldiers come home we beelieve in taking care of them beecause they’ve long taken care of us. That’s why we’re proud to support Wounded Warrior Project this month. Hope you will be, too.

Evolution’s Announcement, HPP (Or Not) And You

April 21, 2015 By Jen Chase

HPP ain’t the way to bee (for The Juice Standard) but many juiceries use the process. We don’t judge…but we do have opinions. Read below and decide for yourself what’s best for your WHealth™.

True: All that cucumbery goodness would keep in an HPP bottle for up to six weeks, but where’s the honest-to-goodness freshness in that? We don’t judge companies that use HPP…but we won’t.

Did you see today’s news about how Evolution Fresh (makers of cold-pressed juices and smoothies) is adding a bevvy of fruit and veggie juices to its already gargantuan lineup? (It’s not long. You can read it here.) This spring, five new flavors of its cold-pressed juice—plus a current flavor already in its repertoire—will join Evolution’s 42 others…but they’ll be available in smaller bottles (11 ounces vs. the 15.2 ounce-bottles they make now).

As always, juicy news of any variety gives us reason for pause because there isn’t a company on the planet that doesn’t get a little antsy when someone does something different. But instead of useless hand wringing, Evolution’s announcement gives us a perfect podium for talking about something major we think sets The Juice Standard from the rest:

We’re committed to sourcing organic, and we don’t use the process called HPP.

What’s HPP, you wonder? “High pressure processing.” It’s a technique that lets juice producers extend the shelf life of their product by up to six weeks. Now, that’s rad for sales…but honestly, TJS beelieves that juice is pretty much dead by then. And since we’ve built our biz around the premise that juice should in fact be super fresh, vital, and rich with the enzymes Mother Effen Nature intended, we’d never dream of using HPP to bottle our juice. ‘Cause like our name says…we gots standards.

In our bumblebee-humblebee opinion, HPP is something to avoid. But to be fair—because around here we beelieve in karma—we get why companies use the process. There’s also plenty of lit on the Internets about why and how this process isn’t as damaging as people like us think. But we just happen to think that our way is the best way…both for our WHealth™, and yours. No disrespect to those who do it different. It’s simply not our choice.

The juicery playground is an expansive space. Lots of options out there. Our hope is simply to be a bastion of awesome information so you can make the best decisions possible. Meantime, see you as you stock up on TJS’ raw, cold-pressed, committed-to-organics, knock-your-socks-off-tasty, badass Singleton bottles at Ft. Apache, The Rose, or The Buzz over at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

Since We Thought It, TJS Has Come…To Henderson!

April 16, 2015 By Jen Chase

Patience may be a virtue, but as we await the soft open of our second TJS tomorrow The Hive is mindful of what got us here: positive thinking, a little movie magic and two damn smart women.

In Field Of Dreams, Cutie Kevin Costner—all corn-fed, farmery and hottt-with-three-Ts—walks through his hard-grown corn to the tune of the voices in his head, telling him if he mows his crop, builds a baseball field and hosts an ethereal game-of-all-time, he’ll raise enough dough to pay his mortgage and save his family farm.

"If you build it he will come." It's that kind of positive thinking that if used the right way can help us get through anything...even waiting for a new TJS location to open!

“If you build it he will come.” It’s that kind of positive thinking that if used the right way can help us get through anything…even waiting for a new TJS location to open!

FOD and the messages James Earl Jones delivered in his molasses voice gave us some pivotal rah-rah movie moments that speak to the American dream: work hard, believe in something bigger than you, and you’ll be rewarded. At this point in the post, hopeful happy-ending seekers (like moi) might hear The National Anthem or smell some salty Fenway Franks wafting through the screen, but we all know success ain’t that easy. I mean, it is…but it’s not. Markets crash. People lose their jobs and homes. Some get tumors and die young. Some get sick young and live long. You never know. But pragmatics aside, FOD is based on positive thinking. Toss some inspired thought with blind faith, trust, and the support of solid people around you, the only thing that can get in the way of your success is you.

Mike Dooley has made it his mission to help people change their attitude to change their lives. “Thoughts become things, so make ’em good ones.” “Spiritual accountability.” That stuff. If until now that hasn’t been your flavor of prophecy—if you’re more used to living from a place of reaction than of proactive attraction and working to create your future—I want to talk about Jamie and Marcella.

These two are soon to open The Juice Standard’s second location just 14ish months after their first, and I was thinking about the magnitude of that this morning. Almost 2 years ago I sat with them at Eat in Downtown Las Vegas to review exercises we’d done to reveal the type of ‘tude they wanted to imbue their site and social media. And I so vividly remember sitting across from them, thinking that these two are extremely young and vibrant women who could’ve used their smarts and passion for pretty much anything…yet they decided to bring organic, cold-pressed juice to the Valley because they believe in enhancing the healthy mindset of a city known for extravagance.

That’s not bullshit, Bees. These two are in it to win it…for you. They beelieve in their product, and they beelieve in it because they want to bring it to you. Swear.

All said, J & M didn’t know how Las Vegas would react to The Juice Standard. But they hoped people would embrace the idea of healing the body with what’s put in it, not what meds it’s prescribed. They hoped people would go all in with the “your health is your WHealth” thing and start acting like one’s WHealth is their greatest asset. Hell, bennies aside, they even hoped people would chug TJS juice because it tastes so freaking good. And in its first year, TJS made it.

Have there been setbacks? Youbetcha. Way more places sell juice today than a few years ago, so there’s that. When you’re committed to seasonality, menus have to change when ingredients ebb and flow from availability. All organic, all-the-time takes deep dedication when it would be a lot cheaper easier to use conventional produce. And (sigh of all sighs) as of this writing they’re awaiting a soft open on Saturday 18 April after waitingandwaitingandwaiting for months for their beeautiful buildout to finish! But, Marcella’s and Jamie’s positive thinking and commitment to their honest, authentic desires brought not only success on Ft. Apache (we proudly earned “Best Of Las Vegas” accolades by the Review-Journal!)…starting tomorrow it’s bringing a second location.

“If you build it, he will come.” Positive thinking, blahblahblah. Sounds like a container of caca when you’re in an emotional sinkhole. But for believers, positive thinking is a life preserver for the soul. I’m making this up here, but let’s go ahead and call it a soul preserver. Because in your sacred ring of positivity, you’ll bob up and down through whatever shit you’re wading, and though it won’t be the only thing that saves you, you’ll stay just enough buoyant to float, be seen, and grasp something that will.

Soul preserver. Seriously…just made that up. I like it.

Now go get some juice tomorrow at our brand-spanking-new location Jamie and Marcella are calling “The Rose” (2530 St. Rose Pkwy., Henderson, NV 89074). And as we await that soft open, my gentle hope for you today—and the hope from the rest of The Hive!—is that whether you’re drinking TJS juice or not, make some time to nourish your bod in a way that makes you happy, and do a little day dreamin’ about the good stuff you can work toward attracting to your life. Sit quietly. Breathe. Visualize a moment or a sitch from your life as you’d like it played out like a cut scene from FOD (starring you!) streaming in your head. Because in the slightly more spicy words of the righteous Mike Dooley, thinker of all-things positive: “If thoughts become things, make ’em effing good ones.”

You go, Wayne.

You go, Wayne.

Little Green Lies

April 6, 2015 By Jen Chase

(…And Other Funny Things To Tell Your Kids To Drink Green Juice)

Years ago I was a writer for a media company that had Breville as a client, and my main job was to blog about the best ways to use Breville products here at Food Thinkers…either by sharing recipes or outside-the-box ideas for multitasking its tools.

Look at these cukes! Gorge. Let's teach kids that green really can be good.

Look at these cukes! Gorge. Let’s teach kids that green really can be good.

Breville is well known for its counter-top ovens and tea brewers but is especially popular for its centrifugal juicers. Now, lots of budding home juicers start out with centrifugals because they’re user and wallet friendly. But once juice fans increase their juicy knowledge and learn why bumping and grinding produce in a centrifugal isn’t the best way to squeeze juice from produce (#pressedisbest, and so are masticating machines like the Omega), home juicers often graduate to other kinds of machines (or, cough, buy bypass the whole home-juicing mess and pick up product from TJS). But to be fair, a Breville machine is a great step toward improving one’s WHealth™ and glowing self. No judgment.

Anyhoo. One of the most fun posts I wrote was tailored around a funny little tweet that a parent posted to Twitter responding to something we’d said (can’t remember what). The topic was about getting kids to eat foods they find too icky to touch because they’re green, and the Twitterer’s suggestion for getting more WHealth-friendly avocados into a tot’s little bod was to call it “martian butter.”

Brill, right? In my post, I played off the Tweeter’s superb suggestion by noting that the color of certain foods can be a real hang up for lots of people. Granted, parents hope kids outgrow their arbitrary culinary dislikes by tweendom, but the fact is, we eat with our eyes long before food hits our mouth. So kids are right: If something looks gross, we’ll probably avoid it.

All said, I’m a firm believer that if you can start kids on a WHealthy-eating path from being really young, and if you happen to be blessed with a littleton with a sense of humor, their natural monkey-see-monkey-do’ness can have them downing the same green juice that you do. Just tell ‘em it’s “Martian Juice!”

See? Marvin Martin says to just tell 'em it's "martian juice."

See? Marvin Martin says to just tell ’em it’s “martian juice.”

And have fun with it! Pour it in a sippy cup, or put it in one of those Duralex, perfect-for-little-hands tempered glasses that European kids (and all the children I’ve cared for or nannied) have been drinking out of for eons. That way they’ll be able to see just how green it is.

Wanna test our theory? TJS’ Bee WHealthy is a little less “greeny” than our other green juices thanks to some sweetness from apple, but as we shared in our March 28 Facebook post, kids like Sterling and Maximus Sylver love drinking what their mum and dad do…and their favorite happens to be the very grown up Bee Alkaline.

Sterling, 4 (in the Spidey hat) and Maximus, 2, point to their fave TJS juice: Bee Alkaline.

This is still one of our fave pics in TJS Store Lore: Back in 2015 when this piece first ran, Sterling was 4 (in the Spidey hat) and Maximus was 2, as they pointed to their fave TJS juice (and one of our greenest): Bee Alkaline. For real.

We think it’s the kid-friendly cuke that makes that one so addictive, and its addictiveness is exactly what makes green juice satisfying enough for any man, woman, child…or martian.

Spring Clean Yo’Self With E3Live Shots

April 1, 2015 By Jen Chase

Here on the West coast we’ve already had weeks of warmth (don’t you be hatin’ on us, New England!), but even if you live in a warm-weather clime, doesn’t April feel like spring’s real start? Does to us. And as the weather warms and Mother Nature kicks it into gear, spring is one of those natural annual times when folks think about longer cleanses.

If you’ve read our Friends Who Juice profiles or talked with other Bees who have done TJS cleanses, you might’ve heard that folks feel pretty great when drinking our juice. Honestly, Marcella and Jamie put tons of thought into every recipe to ensure it tastes kickassingly good; but they also deeply considered the order in which each juice should be drunk so you’d feel satisfied (read: not hungry) and live your normal life with as little energy interruption as possible.

Any cleanse length will do your bod a world of good from the break you give it from chewing and digesting all that roughage. But would you believe us if we said TJS is offering yet another way to boost your cleanse’s bennies? Take a looky:

2015.0401_Product Image_ E3Live Algae

Know how we serve Power Shots? They’re sips of goodness we’ve filled with things like turmeric, ginger, apple cider vinegar, oil of oregano and lemon to help support your immune system. Well now we have one with E3Live, this blue-green algae packed with 65 vitamins, minerals, amino acids and essential fatty acids (EFAs) that help increase stamina; reduce stress; speed up post-workout recovery; and support healthy skin, hair and nails. We mix a tablespoon of this magic stuff with some coconut water for your “one-and-done” shooting pleasure, as Jamie likes to say.

The E3Live shot (we haven’t named it yet…maybe “Bee Alive?”), along with our Flu Shots and Wellness Shots are awesome additions to your everyday WHealthy tool kit, but knock back these puppies during a cleanse and without having to bypass chewed-food roughage, their potency gets jacked because they’re more quickly absorbed into your bloodstream. Plus, they’re served in the most adorb little copper cups—with handles!—that’ll make you feel like you’re at the Kentucky Derby or something. Or not. They’re still cute.

So now that it’s April, if you’re considering a-day-or-more cleanse, consider our E3Live shot. Hell, even if you’re not cleansing, your system can always use a little sprucing, spring or not. And since our spring lasts for a hot Vegas minute, get outside and take advantage of these temps. Soon enough we’ll all be heading to Boston.

Ode To A Pushed-Back Grand Opening

March 31, 2015 By Jen Chase

A limerick in four lines about construction woes at TJS’s brand new location….

There once was a juice bar in LV,

That was growing too fast for its addy.

Gorge space was secured; but its build-out, deterred…

By mid-April, an open “Rose” we foresee!

That’s right, Bees. First we thought it would be last November. Then, early 2015. Then March. Then, April 6. But the truth is, brilliance takes time, and though we shouted out the new space in last month’s newsie, we’re nearly certain that by mid April our brand new location in Henderson will be open. We’re calling her “The Rose” since she sits on St. Rose Parkway, and with her parking and easy off-the-highway access we know she’ll be a welcomed spot for our loyals in Henderson who are craving the same cold-pressed juice that Las Vegans near Ft. Apache can get so easily.

Just because the date’s been pushed back doesn’t mean we haven’t been busy! Last week we were in the new space shooting images for upcoming Facebook and blog posts as our contractors drilled and banged away. (Oy.) Here are some behind-the-scenes pics to get you as psyched about the space as we are.

What Grows In Vegas Actually Stays In Vegas

March 31, 2015 By Jen Chase

Local organic produce fills our juices. And that makes us very, very happy.

Produce People of Las Vegas! This is for you.

If you’re not a born-and-bred Las Vegan, the produce expectations of folks who move to Southern Nevada from four-season climes can feel totally out of sync with Mother Nature’s desert sked. Used to apples in the fall? Peas in the spring? Wild strawberries for a hot June minute? Out here, since California is just a state border away and Mexico is our (almost) next-door neighbor, tropical fruit is practically local, and near-year-round tomatoes in restaurants and farmers markets (delicious ones!) are the norm, not the exception.

Last year I wrote a piece in an effort to blow up the misconception that desert=nasty-bad produce. You can read it here, where you’ll also find a handy little visual that the talented Vegas Seven graphic design team created to show you what you can plant, when (or at least buy from local farmer). Because the truth is, with enough water and attention to what’s in your soil, plenty can thrive in our ground as long as you know what to grow. And with Nevada’s multiple growing seasons, sometimes there’s actually more opportunity to enjoy things like tomatoes throughout year, where in a place like my home state of Massachusetts, biting into lush tomatoes outside the itty-bitty window of July-September is like hitting an heirloom lottery.

Vegas Seven Produce Wheel

At TJS we really pride ourselves on sourcing as much organic local produce as we can. And at this blessed time of year when Vegas is the perfect temp, we’re proud to highlight our recipes that are filled with the region’s springtime bounty: carrots, leafy greens and beets. Pick up a Bee Energized, Bee Grateful, Bee On Point, or any of our green juices for mega doses of what Southern Nevada is harvesting right now and enjoy a little Vegas spring in a bottle.

Feel Like A Superhero With Bee Invincible

March 30, 2015 By Jen Chase

“What’s that ‘Bee Invincible’ coffee you have up there on the menu?” is a question we get every now and then. It’s partly because few places in the area serve it—The Juice Standard (TJS) may actually be the only one but don’t quote us—so it’s rare. But even for vegan or Paleo bees used to ordering coffee with almond, soy or coconut milk or cream, seeing coffee made with oil and butter seems a little weird. But that’s until you try it. And if this is totally new territory for you, let us explain….

Ever hear of “buttered coffee” or the trendier term “Bulletproof Coffee?” They’re actually riffs off an ages-old Tibetan drink called “yak butter tea” that uses yak butter the way Westerners use typical dairy in our cuppas. (Tibetans have more yaks than cows so they turn yak milk into butter…butter that can be kept shelf stable for up to a year if wrapped properly.)

In recent years, “buttered coffee” became all the rage when this guy researched the yak butter tea he tried on a Tibetan trek. After understanding the energy it gives Tibetans living and working the land in high altitudes, he learned that yak butter is super high in medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs)…a “healthy fat” that supplies long, slow energy. Back here in the United States, to mimic the Tibetan drink’s benefits he combined a serving of freshly brewed coffee with a tablespoon of coconut oil (high in MCTs and lauric acid…and rootin’-tootin’ tasty) and a tablespoon of grass-fed butter or ghee (close cousin to that yak butter…and, very tasty) to create “buttered coffee.” When you blitz it all up in a high-speed blender the mixture froths like a latte. And it’s just as creamy, without the dairy.

Bee Invincible Ingredients

There’s a lot of info on the Internets about how the oils combine with coffee’s caffeine to slowly release energy rather than in a typical surge or crash. If you’re a food nerd like me, head to The Google and have at it. Recipes abound.

Since few places make this smooth, satisfying (and dareIsay healthy) coffee, most fans make it at home. But a standout feature of TJS’ recipe was deftly explained to me last weekend by TJS Operations Manager Zach Harder.

“One of the things that sets our Invincible apart is that we use espresso rather than freshly brewed coffee, and the texture is sort of cloud-like…light, airy and floaty,” says Harder. Further, Harder says that using two espresso shots and two draws of water uses less water than a typical cup of coffee which also contributes to a richer coffee flavor when blended in TJS’ high-speed Vitamix with a tablespoon of our favorite Purium coconut oil and Kerrygold grass-fed butter (unsalted). (You may also order it with ghee, which is clarified butter that has its milk solids removed through a heating process.)

Harder was totally right. I make mine at home and was blown away by the espresso difference (espresso made with Mothership beans roasted locally by our friend Josh Walter from Sunrise).

Bee Invincible isn’t the acquired taste you’d imagine, especially if you take your brew with a creamer but no sugar. Come try. And if you make yours at home, let us know what you think of ours.

Friends Who Juice—Q&A With Lin Jerome

March 30, 2015 By Jen Chase

Friends Who Juice Image-Lin Smith Jerome

Like Stacy’s Mom, Lin Jerome’s got it goin’ on. One of those rare birds who seems to not only handle but embrace with grace what life throws her way, by day this law-school grad worked for various nonprofits before landing herself in the office of admissions and financial aid at her alma mater. By night she’s the hostess with the mostess at events sponsored by Ladies Who Dine, the organization she founded to connect like-minded, philanthropic women interested in doing good in and around Sin City.

Plus, she juices.

We happily welcome Jerome into the TJS Hive not for her stellar taste in cold-pressed juice (though that helps…no lie), but for the heart, mind and bod she allows our juice to help feed.

Learning About Lin

I grew up in… New York, NY, and moved to Green Valley (Henderson) when I was 10 years old.

I went to college in Nevada. I stayed here because… Vegas is home for me. I love this city and what it has to offer. Vegas is a small town and I love our close-knit community. It’s a community that has ALWAYS been good to me and supported me and I am proud to call Vegas my home. I could not imagine living anywhere else.

The biggest misconception about living in Las Vegas is… that we have no sense of community and are consumed with materialism and a “party culture.” This just isn’t true.

The thing I secretly love most about living here is… feeling at home wherever I go and always seeing a familiar face. We are one big happy family!

I’m a UNLV Law graduate and I work in higher education… but when I was

little, I really wanted to be a… rock star. J

My mantra or “quote to live by” is…  ”A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.” Coco Chanel

What motivates me out of bed in the morn is… my husband, mother and grandmother, and making them proud.

If I had to pick a theme song for my life it would be… Crazy in Love by Beyoncé.

People laugh at me most when they learn… that I sing, and was in a girl group in my late teens.

Don’t get me started talking about… disloyalty!

Every day I strive to… accomplish more.

My health habit I’m teased about the most is… working out at the crack of dawn.

My three dogs are named… Vegas, Mr. Big and Kingston.

True or false: Based on your above answer, you did or didn’t cry on the inside when you saw the closet Big built Carrie in Sex and the City? OMG I definitely did! I am a Sex and the City fanatic! The theme song has been my phone’s ringtone for 8 years (LOL). That closet was to die for! (Hint hint to my husband, Stephen.)

True or False: Your pet tortoise, Valentino, is faster than he looks. He definitely gives Mr. Big a run for his money!

Lin’s Livelihood

My day job is… Associate Director of Admissions for the Boyd School of Law; and, Founder and President of Ladies Who Dine and Candles for a Purpose.

The charity I support most often is… Green Our Planet.

I founded Ladies Who Dine because… there are so many women in our community who truly want to get involved in philanthropy and want to feel a sense of comradery with other women, without having to pay thousands of dollars to be a part of an organization. Plus, who doesn’t love dining out, meeting new people, going on girl’s trips, and giving back at the same time! It’s just fun.

The perk I enjoy most about Ladies Who Dine is… meeting new women and connecting and bonding during our volunteer activities and dining events.

My favorite advice to pass onto female professionals is… do not ever let anyone tell you what it is that you should be doing with your life. I truly believe you can do anything you want as long as YOU believe in it and YOU want to do it.

The best advice I ever received was… “Do what you love, and everything else will fall into place.”

The number one thing I would’ve told my younger self is… save all that cocktailing/cabana host money. (LOL)

Something that scares me is… letting life pass by without experiencing everything I want to experience. I’m a bit of an overachiever.

Something I do that people say is scary is… HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). It’s the best ever!

If I could go anywhere tomorrow, I’d be on a plane to… Cabo.

My top-three future goals are… to partner in a fitness studio; to expand Ladies Who Dine/Candles for a Purpose; and to be able to spend more time with my husband whose schedule is crazier than mine.

The very best part of me is… my desire to give back to others with everything I do and to never give up on anything I believe is worth fighting for.

Lin On Juice

I realized I loved cold-pressed juice when… I stepped foot in TJS! I had never had cold-pressed juice before and I was immediately hooked. I love it!

Today I drink juice because… I love the way it makes me feel and the health benefits juicing presents.

I like to cleanse… every three to four months. I have done cleanses in the past and have been unbelievably miserable: constant headaches, fatigue, and irritability. The first time I did a TJS cleanse I was floored by how amazing I felt. I was happy, had plenty of energy and felt as though I could continue for days on end. Way to go [Jamie and Marcella]…your cleanse is perfection!

When I’m not drinking TJS juice, my favorite cocktail is… Champagne. I am a Champagne junkie. I even have the TJS “Green juice now, Champagne later” shirt.

This is the moment that made me know I wanted juice as a part of my healthy lifestyle:  I love to work out and have been training at Core Studios doing Pilates and HIIT for years. I loved going to class in the mornings and going straight to TJS afterward for juice. Juice was the pick-me-up I needed after class and it became a part of my daily routine.

When people ask, I tell them my fave TJS flave is… Bee WHealthy and most definitely Bee Happy.

The funniest thing that ever happened to me while I was on a cleanse was… going to a very well known restaurant in town and having a small cooler in my purse with my juice. My friends thought it was hilarious.

My advice to a newbee juicer is… to replace one meal a day with a TJS juice and monitor how you feel over a week’s time. Then, move toward doing a three-day cleanse. I guarantee you will feel like a new person and will become just as obsessed as I am. I love TJS!

Get Your Shave On For St. Baldrick’s Foundation

March 4, 2015 By Jen Chase

When Team TJS awoke this morn we’d thought we’d be teasing the TJS newsletter that’s landing in your inbox tomorrow (‘cause if it’s the first Thursday of the month, must be TJS newsletter day!); but we’ve got bigger and better news:

We’re giving away free juice.

(Whaaa?)

Beelieve it, Beeauties! All month long, The Juice Standard (TJS) is treating everyone to free juice who shaves their head in support of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a national org that raises money for cancer-curing research for kids.

Letusjustsay we.heart.St. Baldrick’s. Since so many children lose their loverly long and short locks during treatment, in 1999 St. Baldrick’s found a fun and meaningful way to help kids feel more supported. And through its more than 4,000 head-shaving events across the country, friends, fam and generous St. Baldrick’s supporters take it allll off after raising money from the people in their life who thought they’d never do it. (Right?! Let’s call a spade a spade here, folks! Most people wouldn’t willingly shave their head…talk about an act of love). St. Baldrick’s then takes all the moolah from the new baldies and gives it as grant money wherever the medical community needs it most (mostly research hospitals).

Bald is bee-autiful, peeps! It’s scary to think about facing the world without the hair we sometimes hide behind and don’t even know it…but that fright is nothing compared to how a child may feel about not seeing his or her next bday.

So: Shave your head in March at a St. Baldrick’s event, tag TJS in whatever selfie you post of your bald-ass self to social media, and get a free Bee Pure or Bee Vibrant (both tasty takes on a classic lemonade). And for those of you who have a huge heart but just can’t grab a razor, TJS is now sporting a donations jar at the Ft. Apache store. Plus, if you bring in your clean used bottles you can donate the dollar you’d get back for your recycling straight to the St. Baldrick’s jar.

We heart charity, and we heart St. Baldrick’s. If you do too, there’s nothing we’d like to do more than honor your attempt to bee WHealthy with your spirit (and vanity!) but showering you with some free juice. Hope to see you!

Friends Who Juice—Q&A With Elle Harford

March 1, 2015 By Jen Chase

TJS’ Elle Harford grew up in a small town in British Columbia surrounded by the kind of lush nature Canada is known for, where everyone has a vegetable garden, and eating fresh, produce-filled meals is organic life as everyone knows it. But for the last 10 years, Harford has called Las Vegas home, and clean eating and healthy living hasn’t been as easy as it was during her former life in her northern town.

Elle Profile Pic

“[With] so many temptations and limited options, I admit I veered off in my early twenties,” says Harford of Sin City life. “But, naturally, like a river that flows to the ocean, I found my way back.

Harford is a store manager at TJS and calls working with us “a dream come true. “Since eating raw and organic food is something I’m passionate about, it’s been very rewarding to be able to share it with everyone in our community instead of just my friends.”

Read how Harford puts her stamp on a little section we like to call Friends Who Juice as she opens up about health, happiness, and what, er, gets her (TJS) juices flowin’.

Elle Being Elle

When I’m working at The Juice Standard I feel…happy! It’s my oasis in the desert.

My “quote to live by” is…”Love the life you live; live the life you love.”

What motivates me to get up in the morning is…my family.

The best advice I’ve ever received Is…“Don’t waste time doing something you’re not passionate about.”

My favorite charity Is…Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada. It helped my family in a time of need.

My future goals are…to keep following my bliss; start meditating; read more books; and spend more quality time with the family.

If I could go anywhere TOMORROW, I’d…first head to Germany to visit my Oma (grandmother), and then, to Australia.

Something that scares me is…creepy kids in scary movies.

The very best part of me is…my calmness.

The No. 1 thing I’d tell my younger self…There are two: “Save your money” and “wear sunscreen.”
If I had to pick a theme song for my life it would be…evolving! I love music, so I feel like my theme song changes all the time. Of late I’d have to say, Gravity by DJ Fresh featuring Ella Eyre. I dedicated it to someone special recently. (TJS: “Awwwww!)

Why We Heart Her

I juice because…It makes me feel amazing!

After a cleanse I feel…light as a feather. And, accomplished.

When people ask, I tell them my fave TJS flave is…Bee Effective. It’s so green tasting, and there’s coconut water in it (yum!).

(Speaking of…a topic I just can’t enough of is…coconut oil. Its uses are endless. I could go on forever.)

My advice to a new-bee juicer is…drink lots of water; listen to your body; and keep your calendar clear and a restroom near!

Adorbs, right? Come meet Elle and experience her sincerity and verve while she serves you the best in cold-pressed juice.

Espresso Yourself…With TJS Nut Milk

March 1, 2015 By Jen Chase

Espresso Nutmilk smallIs the scrumptious, protein-y goodness in a bottle of TJS nut milk a breakfast replacer or energy booster?

(How ‘bout both?!)

Even our most ardent green juicing bees come in for something dreamy and creamy every now and then, hoping that one of our five signature nut milks will hold them over ’til they can enjoy their next chewing meal. But for when you need something that’s filling and naturally energizing, the solution is simple:

Add an espresso shot!

TJS serves a kickass Americano, latte, cappuccino, raw cacao mocha, and an exquisitely simple espresso shot, each from organic beans roasted by local Las Vegas master roaster Joshua Walter and our friends at Mothership Roasters (same guys at Sunrise Coffee on Eastern Avenue near the airport). We also have our Bee Invincible (which you can read about here). To those coffee bevvies we add our homemade cashew cream. But for a total treat, ask for a bottle of nut milk, unscrew the cap, take a sip off the top to make a little room, and we’ll add a shot of espresso straight to the source. (We recommend Bee Magnificent or Bee Happy for this experiment but go ahead and bee creative.)

And for a cuppa something super cold or super hot instead, we can also pour an espresso shot over ice and drench it in your nut milk, or steam your nut milk and add an espresso shot for a coffee drink that’s as warming (or cooling) as you need.

As our trusted coffee-roasting connoisseur Josh Walter advised in this month’s Rated magazine feature about the rise of (good) Vegas coffee, the next time you’re looking for a natural jolt that has nada to do with Red Bull, turn to espresso. And by all means, grab a bottle of any of TJS’ nut milks plus an espresso shot. Because TJS nut milk + espresso shot = hot OR cold deliciousness. Try it, Bees! We aim to pleese!

Hello, Beeauties! TJS Is Growing!

March 1, 2015 By Jen Chase

We heard you, Hendo; and like The New York Sun said to Virginia when she wondered if that ‘ol Santa Claus was a poser, “Yes, Henderson, there is a TJS…and it’s coming to a space near you.”

No more trekking to Ft. Apache to satisfy your juice fix (unless you want to). No more bagging “Wednesday-Cleanse Days” because our flagship is too hard to reach with workweek traffic. No more hatin’ on your Vegas bestie because she’s closer to TJS than you are. You’ve humbly made us so popular that we need more space. And with our growth comes a bee-auteous second location on St. Rose Parkway that’s easy peasy to reach from 215, just seconds off Exit 6.

As we near our open date (mid-month, coughcoughcough) we’ll leave you with these bits to whet your juicy whistle: there will be parking (natch); there will be juice (double natch); deliciously chewable treats are TBD; and most important, “The Rose” (as we like to call her) boasts a spacious room filled with TJS’ signature atmosphere—the black walls, the sparkly fixtures, the gold, and our signature hand-drawn art.

(Know what else it’ll have? More comfy space than we know what to do with! But we’re pretty sure it’ll entice our loyal Henderson fans to sit a spell while sipping TJS’ liquid nutrition.)

We’re itching to open but won’t until the details are just right. Stay tuned to our social media and website, and you can always get the skinny from one of our trusted staff behind the counter the next time you hit the Ft. Apache store.

Onward, Bees! Without you, this expansion wouldn’t have been necessary…so we humbly say, “thanks bee to you!”

February Is Heart Month, So Love Thyself First

January 28, 2015 By Jamie Stephenson

HeartHealth2As the adage goes, you can’t love someone else until you love yourself. So since February is the month of love, what better way to show your love than to take care of home and explore a little self love?

If you have a hard time thinking of where to start, showing yourself some love, first, can be done in baby steps:

Step 1) Try hitting the gym to get your heart rate up and your blood circulating (it helps the bod purge toxins through the skin by sweating, and strengthens the heart and self-esteem at the same time).

Step 2) Employ the 80/20 rule to help boost your self esteem. Never heard of it? The 80/20 states that to maintain your overall health and your looks in a way that makes you feel good about yourself, it takes 80 percent diet and 20 percent exercise. So do what you can in Step 1 to help achieve Step 2.

Step 3) Eat real food.

That last one is especially near and dear to us. Because it’s no secret that we here at The Juice Standard beelieve that drinking raw, fresh cold-pressed juice made from organic produce is incredibly nutritious because it contains real food…you’re just drinking it instead of chewing it. Juice is easily absorbed into the body with help from its active plant enzymes and phytonutrients. And it heals you and sustains you on a cellular level in ways that would blow your mind. (Want glowing dewy skin, a slim-feeling tummy, increased energy for bedroom romps (it’s the month of LOVE after all) then consider The Juice Standard!)

With all the love going ’round this month, it only makes sense that February is National Heart Month! And as it turns out, TJS loves hearts, too. That’s why we load our juices with ingredients like red radish, cucumber, celery, and raw cashew, to keep your ticker pumping nice and strong! How? Red radish is a great source of anthocyanins, a type of flavonoid that is also found in red wine that not only gives the powerful root its color, but has been linked to reducing the occurrence of cardiovascular disease by reducing inflammation – hence the term, an apple a day keeps the doctor away (apples also contain anthoncyanins, FYI).

So yes: Love thy neighbor? Absolutely. But love thy self first. And what better way than through juice.

Friends Who Juice: Q&A With Couple Kyle & Amber Comstock

January 28, 2015 By Jamie Stephenson

With love for family, friends and each other (and a dedication to health), these two are all about big-picture appreciation for life. And OH how much better that life is when you feel good…with juice.

What’s your collectively favorite TJS Juice?

It is impossible to choose just one! Top three are Bee Energized, Bee WHealthy, and Bee Royal. As far as the nut milks go, Bee Happy.

Best advice you ever received:

Kyle: My mom told me to marry Amber (before we were dating).

Amber: Before consuming anything, think about if it will help heal you or kill you.

Why do you cleanse with juice?

Kyle: To make sure we pack in the nutrients and stay healthy and energized.

Amber: I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 5 years ago and told I would have to be on medicine forever. After 3 months of herbs, juice cleansing and a couple of other natural treatments, I was all cured and haven’t had an issue (or taken any pharmaceutical) since. That made me a believer and extra passionate about what I put in my body. Also, Bee Energized does wonders for helping my cramps. I am always sure to grab a few in the week leading up. (Bee on Point also does the trick!)

Who is the person you admire most?

Kyle: My dad.

Amber: My husband.

Finish this sentence: “My future goals are…”

Kyle: Hitting all the places on our bucket list  and becoming a corporate executive.

Amber: Taking care of my family, continue traveling to new places each year and growing our business.

The place you’d go if you could go anywhere tomorrow is…

Kyle: Bora Bora…or space.

Amber: Maldives or Bora Bora.

How do you feel after a juice cleanse?

Kyle: Clean and light.

Amber: Refreshed, energized, and great in a bikini! 😉

A quote you live by is…

Kyle: Go big or go home.

Amber: If you are depressed you are living in the past. If you are anxious you are living in the future. If you are at peace you are living in the present.

A topic you can’t get enough of is…

Kyle: Technology.

Amber: Anything to do with health or travel.

The thing that motivates you to get up in the morning is…

Kyle: Seizing opportunities.

Amber: My dog scratching at my face and barking at me to feed her!

What advice would you would give a newbee juice cleanser?

Kyle: It gets easier.

Amber: Figure out what your reason is for doing the cleanse and keep that in mind the whole time. Also, try to plan it for a time when you don’t have any social outings scheduled.

Something you’re frightened of is…

Kyle: Losing a loved one.

Amber: Being home alone at night.

Your favorite part of yourself is…

Kyle: My mind.

Amber: My outlook on life

What’s one thing you’d want to tell your younger self?

Kyle: Follow your passion. And it’s not dirtbikes.

Amber: Don’t sweat the small stuff.

The theme song of your life is…

Kyle: Danger Zone.

Amber: It’s Your Love by Tim McGraw and Slow Me Down by Sara Evans

Shameless self promotion: How do you feel when you’re at The Juice Standard:

Kyle: Excited and usually hungry!

Amber: Welcome and indecisive. Everything is so good. I can never decide what to get.

Friends Who Juice—First Person With Celine Go

January 8, 2015 By Jamie Stephenson

This Las Vegas-based yoga instructor at Yoga Sanctuary used healthful workouts, smart food choices and juice to work her way toward WHealth and glowing self. Read how this weekly one-day juicer made the jump to her first three-day cleanse…and succeeded.

I was really excited to do the cleanse and on the other hand was doubting myself that I might not be able to do the whole three days. I usually do a day of cleansing every other Monday. So three days I knew was going to be very challenging. I did it anyway and I’M GLAD I DID.

The first day was the hardest for me. Hot herbal tea helped me a lot when I would feel cold. I had a lot of friends supporting me through text messages, Facebook and Instagram, and that helped me stay focused. There were times I would feel light headed and weak. But I was expecting that.

Second day was much easier and I already felt different the morning I woke up. I didn’t feel bloated, my belly felt flat, and I just felt good! I was drinking my juice and tea the whole day and knew that the third day would even be much easier. Well we went to a Christmas party on my third day and WOW was I tempted to just give this juice cleanse up! But I didn’t! I kept on drinking my hot herbal tea and survived the Christmas party. YAY!

I really don’t know how much total weight I lost doing the three-day cleanse because I don’t weigh myself regularly. I believe weighing yourself sets your mood. The best [judge] is how you feel. How your clothes fit and how your energy level is. That for me is what matters most. After doing the three-day cleanse, I felt really amazing! Thank You The Juice Standard! I’m glad we have you in our community.

Friends Who Juice: Tara Woodall-Diary of a 10-day Juice Cleanse!

January 8, 2015 By Jamie Stephenson

TW-before-after

Watch how a 10-day cleanse with The Juice Standard helped this PR account exec for Las Vegas-based Wicked Creative reform her junk food-eating self into an appreciator of drinking her greens (and taking pride in how she felt).

Day 1: Today went well, which I must admit I was surprised about. I thought I would have a hard time today, but it was actually very easy. I even made fried Oreos for a bunch of friends and was not tempted to eat them at all. I will admit, it gets a little hard to drink three Bee WHealthy, but I know it’s the healthiest one, so it makes sense that the cleanse would incorporate it the most.

Day 2: Today was a little more rough, but not really hard. I feel skinnier already and I am down two pounds. Not going to lie, I have a bit of a headache, which started late last night, but overall, I feel fine. I am kind of waiting for this huge burst of energy that everyone says you get when doing this, but I haven’t had that yet – maybe it’s like a Day Three thing? I don’t know. My roommate just made chicken nuggets and I won’t lie… I am envious.

Day 3: So the hunger is real. My stomach growled so much today, however… it wasn’t in pain. I was fine and I am not entirely sure why because I was most definitely hungry. Anyways! I have lost five pounds in the last three days, which I am pretty excited about and my face is very clear. I generally have clear skin anyways, but there is definitely something different about it today – something good. I went to happy hour with two of my co-workers today and just drank water the entire night and wasn’t even tempted to eat anything there, which is really shocking since we went to Kona Grill and they have amazing sliders. So far, so good. Everyone keeps telling me the first three days are the hardest and I must say—if this is the hardest it gets…I am in great shape. By the way, Bee Magnificent is one of the best things I have ever tasted.

Day 4: Oh man… the struggle was real today. I had a massive headache, was light headed and dizzy and just wanted to fall asleep. I know this was probably my body going through a detox, but it was a hard day and I am so thankful it is over. My normal diet consists of Chipotle and Taco Bell and pumping it full of spinach and other nutrients that are good for it is throwing me off a little bit. It’s a good thing, though, because that means I am flushing out all the crap I have been putting into my body. I think I was even delirious at some points—laughing uncontrollably. My cube mate, who is pretty crazy herself, even told me I was acting loopy. Overall, I am glad it is the end of the day and I get my Bee Magnificent.

Day 5: Well the aftermath of the headache is over. I think the worst part is over now it’s just about enduring all of these holiday parties without mentally breaking. The mental aspect is definitely what will make or break you on this cleanse because you feel as though you aren’t eating—and you go around saying “yeah I haven’t eaten in five days,” but you are. You’re just drinking the fruits and veggies that you’d otherwise chew, which is really the only difference. It’s fair to say that from my brain down, I feel good, but I really hope I am mentally strong enough to get over the simple fact that I am not chewing, I’m drinking. Half way through!

Day 6: Today is A LOT better. I don’t have any signs of a headache or lightheadedness. However, I went on a photo shoot and there was alcohol there, which was really hard to turn down. It’s no secret that I enjoy a good cocktail every now and then… more often the now rather the then. 🙂 I mean we live in Vegas, come on. However, I am pleased to say that although the rather attractive bartender asked me multiple times to taste test the three cocktails he made for the shoot, I politely declined and explained that I was committed to my juicing for the next four days to which he commented on how crazy I must be. Again this goes back to the mental aspect of all of this. If you think about the fact that you are “not able” to be social because you can’t drink or can’t “eat” then you will break, no doubt. If you look at it as still being social, but instead of having a Stella Cidre (my favorite drink) – filled with tons of empty calories that will make their way straight to your love handles where they will happily make a home for themselves and their family members —you are having a Bee WHealthy that is much much much healthier for you in every way possible, then you will definitely make it.

Day 7: Today is when the home stretch begins…three days left. I can totally do this. Forget the fact that it’s Friday and I am going home to California for the holidays, which means food… lots of food, but I can do this. Keeping in mind all the health benefits of this cleanse really helps take my current “juice brain” off the fact that I am missing out on Christmas cookies and white chocolate covered oreo balls shaped into little snowmen – all sarcasm aside, it really does help. I can miss out on a few of those things to live a healthier life. 🙂

Day 8: I am beginning to enter the “change of life” state of mind, which is what I call it when you realize that you are not supposed to be living healthy like this for this 10 days, but rather, for the rest of your life. I don’t want to just end on the tenth day and go back to eating like I was before. First of all, I’ve gone through too many emotions in the past eight days to just throw it all away over some processed food and second of all… I like the feeling of my clothes fitting a little looser. Yeah, that’s always a plus.

Day 9: Down to the wire today and I am feeling good. I kept myself busy all day today wrapping presents like crazy and hanging out with family. They feel bad because they think they can’t eat around me, but I am stronger today than I have been for the last week because I am NOT about to throw this away the day before it’s over. Of course, when I told my family to eat whatever they want and I will just drink my Bee Energized (I was on my second juice of the day at this time), they opted to go to Chipotle. And I am happy to say that although my love for Chipotle is unlike anything I have ever felt before, I stayed strong and sipped on my juice while my parents indulged in roasted bell peppers and zesty chicken.

Day 10: Oh yeah, today is the day and I won’t lie, I am excited for tomorrow to chew my food, but I am glad I experienced the cleanse. I know that I have discipline now and that makes me feel AWESOME. I mean I knew I had discipline to work out on a consistent basis, but my diet has always been my downfall and now I know I can control it. This has definitely been a learning experience and I am happy to say that I did it. Bring on the rest of my last day. 🙂

January is Blood Donor Month

December 27, 2014 By Jamie Stephenson

American Red Cross

With the calendar getting ready to flip to a new year, the American Red Cross is asking eligible blood donors to make a resolution to give blood regularly in 2015, beginning with National Blood Donor Month in January. Did you know that January is National Blood Donation Month!? Now that you do, we want all of you awesome bees who are thinking about donating to your nearest blood blank to have the cleanest blood possible…and we have a few tricks to remove all of those nasty bad toxins that may be building upon your blood.

It starts with beets, Burdock root, Himalayan salt, oregano, pineapple and tomato. These six little awesome ingredients are big supporters of your liver and bloodstream, and they give your blood a solid, oxygenized cleaning. So before you go off being a hero and saving lives, grab a Bee Energized…loaded with enough beets to make your blood sparkle.

Why we should give blood:  Blood contains many life-saving components that can help to treat different illnesses and injuries. For many people, blood donors are their lifeline. Blood donation gives a proud feeling of touching someone’s life in such a beautiful way. It’s an experience that no words can define. You have to donate blood yourself to find out. You also benefit in other ways by donating blood as it reduces the chances of ischemic heart diseases (beginning of heart problems) as frequent donations reduce the accumulated and unwanted iron load from the body. Your blood donation will also get you your blood insurance from us. By keeping the blood line flowing, you will greatly contribute towards a healthier, happier society. Do remember, any one may require blood any time including ourselves and our dear ones.

National Blood Donor Month recognizes the importance of giving blood and platelets while honoring those who roll up a sleeve to help patients in need. It has been observed during January since 1970, and that’s no coincidence. Winter is an especially difficult time to collect enough blood to meet patient needs. Unpredictable winter weather can result in blood drive cancelations, and seasonal illnesses, like the flu, may cause some donors to be unable to make or keep blood donation appointments.

Donors of all blood types are needed, especially those with O negative, A negative and B negative.

Setting Goals for the New Year

December 22, 2014 By Jamie Stephenson

Dear Honey Bees,

With the New Year upon many are thinking about their resolutions for the New Year. It’s a time for letting go of the things that we may be holding onto that no longer serve us. At the same time, it’s also the perfect opportunity to bring in that which we do want and desire most.

Here are some great ways to set, achieve and maintain your goals for 2015:

Meditation. Meditation is a great prelude to setting your goals. Sit in a quiet spot and begin to breath deeply and fully. Just become aware of your breath. If other thoughts begin to arise, simply (without judgement) bring your awareness back to the breath. After a minute or so, ask yourself the 4 soul questions according to Deepak Chopra:

  • Who am I?
  • What is it that I truly want or desire?
  • What is my purpose in life (can also be stated as ‘how can I serve?’)
  • What am I grateful for? These questions are a great foundation and starting point for setting goals that are meaningful and worthwhile.

Write down your goals. After extensive research about what successful people do on a daily basis, there were a few similarities almost completely across the board – two of which were meditation and setting goals. Use a note-taking app like evernote and don’t hold back.

  • Try the train of thought exercise. Just write down what comes to your head without a filter. Don’t stop writing for about 5 minutes.
  • Go through your list and prioritize. Choose 1 or 2 main goals for the year and what you would like to accomplish for the day, week, month, quarter and year.
  • Be Specific. Instead of writing down things that are vague like “I want to start a business”, try something more concrete like, “ I want to own a yoga studio that holds ‘x’ amount of classes per day with ‘x’ amount of students per class.” State the size of the studio and how many rooms would be in it. What forms of yoga will you teach? How many employees will you have? Do you sell merchandise? Do you have a website where you sell merchandise online? Do you have guest speakers and if so how ofter? What will they teach? How much revenue will you make in one year?…You get the point.

State your Obstacles. Once you clearly know what your obstacles are, you can more easily devise a plan to conquer them. Be realistic and list everything that could be holding you back from your goals. They can be external influences, but more often than not, they are internal beliefs that with a simple acknowledgement, can be shifted – opening you up to new possibilities, new perspectives, new ideas, and a whole new life.

Ask “How will I accomplish my goals?” What are the steps you need to take to make your dreams a reality? Make a list of all the avenues and connections you can go through to make it happen.

Share your goals (but only to those that support you wholeheartedly). Get feedback on your ideas. Ask your good friends and family for their suggestions. Ask them to hold you accountable and check in for updates on your path towards completion.

Believe it into existence. If you can ‘see’ it, you can ‘be’ it. Know that ANYTHING is possible and don’t let negative thinking or anything else get in your way.

Season’s Greetings!

December 3, 2014 By Jamie Stephenson

It’s that time of the year again when we find ourselves mindlessly snacking on gluten-filled sugar-pops, rich dips, casseroles and brown sugar-glazed, coco-cola ham! Our daily choices affect how we feel and how we look. Before we know it, the holidays are over and so are those comfy pants you’ve been sporting at home with the family. The Juice Standard made a promise to its bees earlier this year when we opened: we offer you the most convenient form of delicious, nutritious food, in convenient juice form. So come on in and grab a six-pack of organic cold-juice. It’s pounds of produce in every bottle. This is surely more veggies than you could ever chew and you’ll curb your appetite and boost your immune system.

Continuing our holiday theme with this newsletter, our gift to you this season is wrapped in chocolate, spiked with peppermint and garnished with a traditional holiday candy (HINT: it’s red and white!) Mix Bee Happy, a delicious blend of filtered water, coconut water, raw cashew, raw Brazil nut, raw walnut, raw local honey, raw cacao, vanilla bean and pink Himalayan salt, with a shot or two of the holiday classic, Peppermint Schnapps, give it a little jingle bell shake with ice and serve in a martini glass. If you love chocolaty flavors, sprinkle cocoa powder on top, or if you can’t get enough peppermint, crush up some candy canes for a bee-autiful (and delicious) holiday garnish.

He never stops to think of himself (even though he should sometimes) he puts the needs of others before his own, and its admirable.

Him: Favorite charity organization: I don’t have one…. I like to give whatever i can when i can to no kill animal shelters.

Her: Favorite charity organization: St Judes Hospital. Any time I can donate to this charity foundation I do. I love that families everywhere have an affordable option for healthcare for their sick babies.

Him: Future goal(s): Governor

Her: Future goal(s): My future goals as of right now are to keep moving forward in my modeling career and eventually find where I work best and what part of the industry I love most. As of right now I’m very happy where I am, I get to do something different every week, and it keeps things exciting.

Him: Place you would go if you could go anywhere tomorrow:  Bora Bora….   course not sure what the weather is like this time of year… soooo not sure.  =)

Her: Place you would go if you could go anywhere tomorrow: Bora Bora. I have wanted to go there for so long! The beaches look incredible.

Him: How you feel after a juice cleanse:  Good

Her: How you feel after a juice cleanse: Refreshed, revived and healthy!

Him: Quote you live by: You cant do today’s job with yesterdays methods and expect to be in business tomorrow.

Her: Quote you live by: To be honest… I don’t really have a quote I live by. I just try to take each day as it comes, and if I’m feeling stressed I take a few deep breaths and figure it out!

Him: Advice you would give a new-bee juice cleanser:  Start with the sweeter ones…. they might taste off at first, but they grow on you.  I noticed when i first started, I was like… hmmmm lol but then i was like ooohhhhhh!!      =)   Work your way to the roots then the greens…..  Cant live without some sort of juice in a day now.  I literally crave it!

Her: Advice you would give a new-bee juice cleanser: Taste them all! Sometimes it can be overwhelming when you first hear about juicing or see it all for the first time. So I think it’s best to taste a little of them all and warm up to it!

Him: Favorite part of you: My Integrity

Her: Favorite part of you: I think my favorite part of myself is how much I truly care about someone’s well-being. I went to school for nursing because since I was a little girl I always loved helping people. I love seeing people happy and healthy J

Him: How you feel when you’re in The Juice Standard: Always welcome….  =)

Her: How you feel when you’re in The Juice Standard: REFRESHED! It doesn’t matter if I’m there for one juice or 6, I love, love, love the smell and refreshed atmosphere of The Juice Standard. I open my juice the second I’m in the care because I can’t wait J

Bee Natural Deodorant

November 7, 2014 By Jamie Stephenson

We here at The Humble Bee care just as much about our insides, as we do our outsides!  And we know often times, our insides are affected by the things we put on our outsides.  Because of this, we are always searching for natural replacements to our daily necessities!  Today we offer you a an aluminum free deodorant recipe that’s easy to create & WORKS!

Aluminum is the active ingredient antiperspirants rely on to keep our underarms fresh.  Unfortunately, aluminum is also a known neurotoxin that has been linked to breast cancer and neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Benefits of Turmeric

November 3, 2014 By Jamie Stephenson

Turmeric for blog

Did you know November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness month?

It just so happens that several of our juices including Bee On Point, Bee True to You, Bee WHealthy and Bee Brilliant are loaded with a bee-autiful rhizome called turmeric.

This robust rhizome is commonly found in Indian cuisine, like curry, and has been linked to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s because it contains a bioactive compound called curcumin. Curcumin is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent that blocks certain molecules that travel to cells and generate chronic inflammation.

Bonus: when mixed with a pinch of cracked black pepper, it improves the body’s ability to absorb curcumin by 1000%!  Additionally, a tiny dose of curcumin has been said to have a similar effect as an anti-inflammatory prescription drug.

Because the US ranks in the top 5 countries with the highest risk of Alzheimer’s, we encourage all of our bees to take a stand and protect their brain with turmeric!

Let Nature Teach

October 24, 2014 By Jamie Stephenson

Gilcrease-OrchardWith a crisp chill in the air reminding us that winter is right around the bend, my kids and I headed out to Gilcrease Orchard. One of the few farms located in Southern Nevada and conveniently situated in Las Vegas’ backyard, it is just a short drive away from us. Every Saturday during their open season they let people walk through their rows of produce literally creating a dinner menu in your head as you pluck fresh fruits and veggies from the earth. They have created an amazing opportunity to introduce your children to fruits and vegetables from the ground up so to say. In doing so, you can help your children develop a relationship with food that can grow and mature as they do. It is this platform here that can help establish healthier eating habits that can last a lifetime.

So as my children and I walked through rows of apple trees that had no fruit hanging, we discussed how they only grow doing certain times of the year and that most produce has a season. Then we came across an owl habitat where they learned that owls help to keep rodents to a minimum on agricultural farms. Gilcrease Orchards has 2-3 habitats spread across the farm. While not certified organic, this is just one example of how they instill organic practices.

Now it was time to find some veggies to add to our dinner table later that night. Fist we came upon rows of bold purple eggplants. Dense with nutrition, some literally touched the ground because they were so heavy. Since I enjoy a day of experimenting in the kitchen, I quickly felt like a kid again with a fast paced heart and a wide smile. I began looking for few eggplants while daydreaming of different ways to prepare them. Soon we came upon large bushes of grape tomatoes where we were able to find more than enough for the salad later. But they were somewhat scarce so when the kids found a perfectly red one or two, they jumped with excitement. Later we moved on to beets, the extra fun stuff. My kids were surprised to see me dig in the dirt and pull out a vegetable. They could not wait to join in the fun of hunting for the largest beet. My children truly enjoyed running through the aisles of the crops. And I enjoyed watching their curiosity develop into questions never asked before. Why are some tomatoes large and green and others small and red? Why are their holes in some leaves and not others? What makes those holes? It’s these moments here that help mold our children into thoughtful and well-rounded individuals.

Gilcrease Orchard has been in Las Vegas since 1920. In 1997 it was turned into a non-profit organization geared towards creating recreational and educational experiences for people to enjoy. They also host field trips throughout the school year to help elevate the educational experience of elementary school.

I am truly grateful to be able to create such wonderful memories with my children. I thank Gilcrease Orchard for making such things possible.

Friends Who Juice: Shout Out To A Fan

October 7, 2014 By Jamie Stephenson

Ryan-Doherty

When you’re as busy as entrepreneur Ryan Doherty, owner of WENDOH Media (responsible for the brands Vegas Seven and Vegas Rated magazines; SpyOnVegas.com; Shoot To Kill production; and DailyFiasco.com) and a partner in some of Las Vegas’ tastiest watering holes (Itsy Bitsy Ramen and Whisky; Due & Proper; BLVD Cocktail Company), when’s a guy have time to eat? Oh wait. He doesn’t. That’s why he juices. And he juices with The Juice Standard.

Instead of indulging in an unhealthy breakfast, Doherty reaches for a TJS Bee WHealthy™ to start his busy days. We’re thankful for fan-bees like Doherty, whose energy and entrepreneurship are a testament to his desire to make Las Vegas the best it can be, and we admire his choice to not compromise his own health while doing it. Juice On, Ryan! We salute you beecause you juice!
